Senior Bowl Notes and Reports: Day 3

Day Three brought out the passion and the fire in Mobile as the scouts were treated to some hitting and some big plays. With the week winding down today may mark the last day many of these players will have to impress scouts. Here are the reports from yesterday:

“UNC LB Zach Brown showed off some plus hands and coverage skills. He’s a smaller linebacker around 230 pounds, but he’s going to show off some impressive speed at the combine and almost covers like a safety. If a team is looking for an answer to cover a speedy TE, Brown might be their guy. Brown’s also a very solid run defender who I believe will be able to get east and west to make plays.”

Day 3 South Defense Report

“The other player that really shined today in my eyes was Arkansas WR Joe Adams. Adams has tremendous athletic ability and has the speed to run by anyone of the CBs down here. While he does need to refine some of this route running, his ability to stop and go on a dime makes him very tough to cover.”

Day 3 South Offense Report

“NC State LB Audie Cole is a big player at 6’4″ 258, and he showed some nice footwork working with coach Mike Singletary. Cole can really pack a punch in the run game. I question his speed, but he’s a powerful player who will be able to fight through blocks.”

Day 3 North Defense Report

“Cal WR Marvin Jones had another very good practice. He runs really crisps routes and gets in and out of his breaks just as good as anyone down here. What has really impressed me with him is his hands. He catches everything out in front of his body and doesn’t let the ball get into him. He was lined up at the slot position primarily.”

Video Clips of Practice and Interviews

Optimum Scouting

“Couldn’t finish up before practice because of an extended seafood-filled lunch talking about the prospects this week with Josh Norris (@JoshNorris on twitter), and honestly it wasn’t my best practice of evaluations. Still, got some great notes on some of the receivers and offensive linemen who impressed in days past. I thought the biggest winners were Marvin Jones, Lavonte David, Kevin Zeitler, and Alameda Ta’Amu. “

Day 3 North Report

“It was a bit of a windy day in the last NFL scout-full practice here at the Senior Bowl. To be honest, I was a Five-Hour Energy and Starbucks Coffee full, ready to go, so I got a chance to really focus in on how these prospects performed. I really focused on the receivers, defensive backs, and got some great offensive/defensive line notes as well. The biggest winners today to me were Brandon Weeden, Cordy Glenn, Sean Spence, Brandon Boykin, Janoris Jenkins.”

Day 3 South Report

National Football Post

“I thought North Alabama CB Janoris Jenkins looked a bit rusty yesterday. However, Wednesday he showcased impressive balance off the line in press bail, was consistently able to turn and run, and tracked the football extremely well. He was impossible for the bigger receivers on the South squad to separate from and was as dominant as any defensive back down here this week.”

Day 3 South Report

“Arkansas State LB Demario Davis again stood out with his natural foot quickness and athleticism in coverage. He quickly can redirect, finds the football well and has a burst out of his breaks. Plus, he displayed good change of direction skills limiting tight ends in man coverage.”

Day 3 North Report

Player/Team Observation

“BRANDON BOYKIN – CB – GEORGIA: Boykin has had a nice week and it’s not that I haven’t been impressed with him, I just expected him to be one of the more polished corners since he was going back and forth last year about declaring early as a junior. Boykin probably had his best day today, gluing onto Dwight Jones to break up a deep flag route and he also disrupted another redzone attempt. “

Day 3 South Report

“MARVIN JONES – WR – CALIFORNIA: Jones was easily the star of the day today with a number of impressive grabs, one in particular on the sidelines that was thrown at his feet but he scooped it up right off the ground. He also made a terrific catch with Leonard Johnson draped all over him on a curl route that he did a great job of using his body to shield the football from Johnson. He was a favorite target of Kellen Moore on the day and made a number of great adjustments on Moore’s inaccurate throws.”
