Brian Quick and Whitney Mercilus Visit Bills

Much like what happened when the Bills brought Russell Wilson in for a visit a couple of weeks ago the Bills brought a couple more previously unannounced guests in with OT Jonathan Martin. Joining Martin in Buffalo was Illinois DE Whitey Mercilus and Appalachian State WR Brian Quick.

Mercilus who led the FBS in sacks this year is an athletic straight line pass rusher who knows how to get up the field and turn the corner on the OT. He has a very effective first step and does a good job getting off the ball quickly. He has some power to this game that is not mentioned much, he has a solid lower body that generates some power for him to use in his bull rush.

He’s a little stiffer than we would like, so that means a possible 34 transition may not work. Also not quite as sudden as other pass rushers like Ronnell Lewis. However Mercilus is really only scratching the surface on what he can become and with time and coaching he could develop into a devastating pass rusher.

We currently rank Mercilus as the #7 DE in this class and #60 overall. We see Mercilus  as a 2nd Round pick.

Whitney Mercilus Scouting Report

The WR from the SOCON conference is considered to be the top Small School prospect in the entire country. Standing at just under 6’4, and over 220 lbs, Brian Quick has developed a reputation for making big plays in big moments.

Quick comes out of an option based offense that often had him running limited routes. Quick runs the 9 (fly), 2 (slant), and 4 (deep hitch) route rather well but he’s not very developed on any of the other routes and that’s going to lead to an adjustment period for him.

What does help Quick is that he’s a big bodied WR who is physical in his nature and does a really good job of working in traffic and using his size and athleticism to go get the ball. A multi-sport athlete Brian Quick has tremendous down the field ball skills and in an offense that could utilize that and allow his over the middle skills to develop with time could find themselves with a real gem.

We currently rank Quick as the #6 WR and #41 overall. We see Quick as a 2nd Round pick.
