UDFA Profile: SAF Ian Wild – Mercyhurst

Ian Wild is one of three SAF prospects the Bills signed as UDFA.

Ian Wild is a name that many people probably were wondering just who in the world this guy is when we signed him. Well first off he comes for Division II and played his college ball at Mercyhurst which is the Pennsylvania Sports Athletic Conference (PSAC).  Wild was also a two sport athlete at Mercyhurst playing both football and lacrosse.

Wild is an excellent tackling SAF prospect who does a good job wrapping up and getting his guy to the ground. One of the first things we noticed on film with Wild is how he attacks the ball carrier. He is a ST demon who flies down the field on kick coverage but even when playing in a standard defense he is always in attack mode. He does a good job laying big hits on the opponents and seems to have a knock for jarring the ball loose and creating fumbles (10 Career FF).

Wild spent most of his time at Mercyhurst playing an OLB role where he was out in space and allowed to read and react to the ball. He struggled at times dealing with blocks and that could be one of the reasons many people project him to move back to SAF. With that move though comes a lot of questions about Wild’s ability to play in coverage. He did some dropping and zone coverage at Mercyhurst but playing SAF is a whole new ball game.

The question for Wild will be can our coaching staff take this raw piece of clay and mold it into a player who one day may be able to contribute? We know he’s a fantastic athlete having been an All-American Lacrosse player but can he become that kind of a caliber football player? He’ll need to make his mark first on special teams.
