Well Joe Schad is back at it again, one day after breaking news that former LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu was entering the NFL Draft, Schad tweets that Missouri DT Sheldon Richardson is also entering the draft forgoing his final year of eligibility.
The Missouri Tigers big man made a name for himself early in the year in the lead up to the Tigers first SEC game v. Georgia when he called Georgia’s style of play calling it “Old Man Football”. Georgia went on to beat Missouri handedly and Richardson, to his credit, sought out UGA Head Coach Mark Richt and apologized for his comments.
Richardson is one of the most highly thought of juniors in this class because of his combination of speed, power, and skill. He was a force on a defense that struggled at times to adjust to SEC tempo and skill. Richardson ended up finishing 2nd on his team in tackles (75), tackles for loss (10.5), and sacks (4) this season.
What makes Richardson so tempting is the way he explodes out of his stance and his ability to get into the gaps and gain penetration. Against UGA he gave their interior lineman fits and was often double teamed. Richardson countered that with a quick spin move that left the OG reaching for air. His coaches also tried to take further advantage of his athleticism by standing him up both on the inside and outside.
Richardson projects to be a 1st Round pick in next year’s NFL Draft. He will be our #1 ranked DT for this class and we expect him to go in the Top 20 picks.
