With Joe Schad’s announcement that Tyrann Mathieu intends to declare himself eligible for the 2013 NFL Draft the greatest annual side show of the NFL Draft is now on. While it officially kicked off weeks ago with Da’Rick Rogers (WR-Tenn Tech) declaring his entry, Mathieu will send shock waves through the sports community due to his actions both on and off the field.
For many Mathieu is known as The Honey Badger, a very appropriate nickname given to him by his Head Coach that quickly went viral. Mathieu showed a knack for making big plays by making two INT’s and forcing six fumbles last season for LSU. He was the star of a defense that featured multiple soon to be first round picks.
Everything fell apart for him this offseason though as Mathieu was dismissed from LSU’s football team after failing multiple tests for drugs. Mathieu who didn’t have it easy growing up vowed to be better and to get himself on the right track. He took the entire year off from football and concentrated on school and getting his head straight.
For a while everything indicated that not only was Mathieu living up to his word but that he was flourishing with the changes in his life. There was talk that he would return to LSU in 2013 and resume his place as a terror on the LSU defense. Unfortunately on October 25th Mathieu was arrested along with three former LSU teammates on possession charges. This arrest likely ended any chance Mathieu had at returning to LSU next season and probably prompted his decision to forgo his eligibility and enter the 2013 NFL Draft.
Pinning down Mathieu’s stock will not be easy, as of now he enters the draft was a very large red flag due to off the field concerns. He likely will be left off some teams draft boards entirely while others will want to roll the dice with the talented LSU CB. There are some concerns though on the field as Mathieu is not an elite cover corner, he is likely an nickel or dime CB in the NFL who may struggle against size WR’s. His knack for making big plays and ability to be electric returning kicks could be enough for more than a few teams to take him on Day 3.
Right now we put Mathieu as a firm Day 3 prospect, he will rank #12 in our 2013 CB class and does not currently sit in Top 150.
