2013 NFL Mock Draft: Updated 12/31/12

Listed on Walter’s Draft Database!

1. Kansas City Chiefs

QB Geno Smith-West Virginia (Scouting Report)

This pick isn’t likely to change between now and the draft from my point of view. The Chiefs need a QB more than any team in the NFL and despite some analysts unwillingness to give Geno his due he is the best QB in this class even if he’s not Luck or RGIII.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars

DE Damontre Moore-Texas A&M* (Scouting Report)

The Jaguars need to address their pass rush problem in the worst way and adding a rusher like Moore who can play both the run and pass will be the best solution for this team.

3. Oakland Raiders

QB Tyler Wilson-Arkansas (Scouting Notes)

The Carson Palmer era is all but over in Oakland and while Terrell Pryor does wait in the wings he is from another regime. The Raiders could jump on Wilson early here and let him compete with Pryor for the job.

4. Philadelphia Eagles

OT Luke Joeckel-Texas A&M* (Scouting Report)

The Eagles must be able to protect Nick Foles next season if they hope to have him last for the full season. Adding Joeckel gives them am elite caliber pass protector with dominant run blocking potential.

5. Detroit Lions

DE Bjoern Werner-FSU* (Scouting Notes)

While Ndamukong Suh is still one of the most feared DL in the league the Lions must add some outside rush with both Cliff Avril and Kyle Van Den Bosch both potentially on their way out. Werner like Moore adds both pass rush and run stopping ability.

6. Cleveland Browns

DE Ezekial Ansah-BYU (Scouting Report)

Ansah may be the third DE off the board but that doesn’t mean he’s going to remain the third ‘best’ DE. Ansah has a higher ceiling than both Moore and Werner and could become a dominant DE with time and reps.

7. Arizona Cardinals

QB Matt Barkley-USC (Scouting Report)

Yes the Cardinals have been burned before on a USC QB but Barkley is a completely different caliber QB to what Leinart was. Barkley should be able to get the ball to Fitzgerald and help keep defenses honest v the Cards run game.

8. Buffalo Bills

OT Taylor Lewan-Michigan* (Scouting Notes)

Many Bills fan will see this pick and start yelling ‘Not again!’. While the Bills may have spent a 2nd round pick last year on Cordy Glenn he may never be at the level of a LT like Taylor Lewan. Let’s also not forget that Glenn was an All-Pro OG in college playing the same position that pending FA Andy Levitre. Levitre figures to be a tough FA to sign given how barren the market will be so the Bills may want to move on by kicking Glenn inside and re-fortifying the LT spot.

9. New York Jets

QB Tyler Bray-Tennessee* (Scouting Notes)

This is a pick that I’m going to call a reach at this point because I’m just not sure how much more Bray offers the Jets immediately over what they already had. Long term Bray has some serious upside but he has a lot of developmental work to do first.

10. Tennessee Titans

CB Dee Milliner-Alabama* (Scouting Notes)

The Titans are still looking to replace Cortland Finnegan who they lost in FA. Milliner is a bigger version of Finnegan’s physical style with more control. Some are worried about how much of a pure cover corner Milliner is but Im confident he can become a lock down CB in the future.

11. San Diego Chargers

OLB Dion Jordan-Oregon (Scouting Notes)

The Chargers need to continue to find way to generate a pass rush and adding Jordan on the outside should do plenty to help that in their 34 set. Jordan is explosive out of the 2 point stance and has spent a lot of time standing up while in college.

12. Miami Dolphins

DT Sheldon Richardson-Missouri* (Scouting Notes)

Richardson will come into Miami to play the UT spot in their 43 base alignment. Richardson’s quick first step and powerful hands should make a great compliment to Cameron Wake’s speed and power off the edge.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

CB Johnthan Banks-Mississippi State (Scouting Notes)

The Bucs have never really been able to find a replacement for Ronde Barber, especially after shipping Aqib Talib to New England. Banks offers fantastic value at 11 while giving the Bucs a player who can step in on Day 1 and likely take over a starting role.

14. Carolina Panthers

OG Chance Warmack-Alabama (Scouting Notes)

While taking a guard this early doesn’t seem like a wise pick value wise Warmack allows them to plug in a true road grader at RG opposite of Amini Silatolu. Warmack should help open holes for Williams and Stewart while keeping a leaky interior line from letting the pass rush get to Cam Newton.

15. New Orleans Saints

DT Star Lotulelei-Utah (Scouting Report)

The Saints add some beef into the middle of their line with Lotulelei who many project to go higher. Star should help to close up some of the holes that have driven Saints fans crazy. He should work well in their system with the DE’s getting up the field quickly.

16. St. Louis Rams

LB Manti Te’o-Notre Dame (Scouting Report)

The Heisman finalist sees a bit of a fall here as he drops to 17. Many fans are enamored with Te’o and consider a sure fire Top 10 pick but he’s still got athleticism questions and needs to test well to finally silence all his critics.

I wouldn’t say the Pats safety position has been worse than the last 2 years, it’s a weakness but it’s stable right now. Love the pick though.
