With their first pick in the 2013 NFL the Buffalo Bills made a statement be selection EJ Manuel to be their next franchise QB. EJ Manuel was a guy the Bills played the draft game with this offseason. At first they seemed hot on him, then talked down about him at their luncheon only to turn the heat back up over the last 24 hours.
EJ Manuel is a classic sized QB with special athleticism and a huge arm. Manuel is extremely manuevarble in the pocket and does a good job side stepping the rush. He’s not a huge threat to run but when he does take off he’s got the open field speed to burn a defense. Manuel is very much a rhythm passer who really builds on positive plays. He has also been called the best fit for a zone-read style offense with his size and athletic ability.
For all his athleticism and size, Manuel will stand in the pocket and scan the field for what seems like forever. He holds the ball agonizingly long raising questions about his ability to process what he’s seeing. He’s been an incredibly inconsistent and frustrating player for FSU fans these last few years but seemed to grow a lot this past season. He must improve his ability to read a defense and key on where the safety is.
Manuel is a guy who could turn out becoming a great pick due to his size, athleticism, and arm. That only happens though if he finally puts it all
together. He must get quicker in how he processes what he sees and he must feel pressure better. He’s another QB who got better as his career went on but is his ceiling limited?
