One day after releasing Alan Branch—a starter on the defensive line last season—the Buffalo Bills made 11 cuts Monday to bring their roster down to the 75-man limit ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

There were no surprises among Monday’s cuts.

The players released were:

  • S Derek Brim
  • QB Dennis Dixon
  • P Jake Dombrowski
  • WR Tori Gurley
  • S Jajuan Harley
  • K Dustin Hopkins
  • DT Damien Jacobs
  • C Macky MacPherson
  • WR Chris Summers
  • G J.J. ‘Unga
  • RB Ronnie Wingo

Among those players, only Dixon, Gurley, ‘Unga and Wingo have seen playing time in regular-season NFL games. ‘Unga and Wingo each saw some playing time for the Bills late last season, but both were buried on the team’s depth chart at their respective positions. Dixon, who spent much of last year on Buffalo’s practice squad, was the fourth-string quarterback on the depth chart and only saw one series this preseason. Gurley has spent time with eight NFL teams since 2011 but has only one career regular-season reception.

Hopkins is a notable cut because he was selected by the Bills in the sixth round of last year’s draft. A groin injury sidelined the kicker last year, however, which allowed replacement Dan Carpenter to flourish in his place and earn a contract extension that pushed Hopkins off the roster.

The Bills also decided not to make a change at punter, at least not among the ones they had on the roster. Brian Moorman struggled in his return to the Bills last season and hasn’t been much better this preseason, but Jake Dombrowski did not emerge as legitimate competition this summer.

Brim, Jacobs and MacPherson are each undrafted rookies who did nothing to differentiate themselves this summer. Harley, who went undrafted in 2013 and has yet to play in an NFL regular-season game, and Summers, who hasn’t seen regular-season action since going undrafted in 2012, also failed to make an impression.

All of the players released Monday are eligible for the 10-man practice squad except for Gurley, who has already spent three NFL seasons on practice squads.

The Bills’ roster trimming is far from over; by Saturday, they will have to have their roster to 53 players. Later this afternoon, I’ll have an updated projection of the 53-man roster and depth chart here at Buffalo Bills Draft.
