South Carolina junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is a rare caliber of NFL draft prospect. He was highly touted as the No. 1 player in his high school recruiting class, and his development over his freshman and sophomore seasons project him as a player who can immediately become an elite defensive player in the NFL.

Yet although Clowney may be a “once-in-a-generation” defensive prospect, that does not necessarily make him the favorite to be the No. 1 overall selection.

While one can certainly debate who the best player is in the 2014 NFL draft, there is little doubt that the NFL is a quarterback-driven league. A top-tier quarterback holds more value than even the most elite of prospects on either side of the ball, including defensive superstars.

In the 2013 NFL Draft, Clowney would have been the clear-cut No. 1 overall prospect months before the proceedings even began. In a class without an elite quarterback prospect — or elite prospect at any position — the Kansas City Chiefs would have made a mistake in drafting anyone other than Clowney if he was draft-eligible.

The 2014 NFL draft class, however, does project to have an elite quarterback prospect: Louisville junior Teddy Bridgewater.

2014 NFL Draft: Why Jadeveon Clowney Is A “Once-in-a-Generation” Prospect

If Jadeveon Clowney was eligible for the 2013 NFL Draft, he would have gone with the first overall pick. He is ranked at the top of my initial 2014 big board, and is going to be very tough to unseat from the top spot this year.

Clowney has the game to fit any defense on the next level. He could put his hand in the dirt as a 4-3 defensive end (what he did at South Carolina) or stand up as a 3-4 outside linebacker. He is a once-in-a-generation prospect who should make an instant impact in the NFL. Clowney is an even more dominant prospect defensively than Andrew Luck was offensively as the consensus No. 1 overall selection in the 2012 NFL draft.

2014 NFL Draft Prospect to Watch: Taylor Lewan

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

It was a surprise for many that Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan returned to Michigan for his senior season. Lewan seemed destined to be a top-5 pick in 2013, especially after three offensive tackles went in the top five picks of this year’s draft. Listed at 6’8″ and 308 pounds, Lewan has the ideal frame NFL teams are looking for in an offensive tackle.

Lewan is experienced: he has started 35 games in the first three years of his Michigan career against good competition in the Big Ten. Lewan was second team All-Big Ten as a sophomore in 2011, but the accolades really began to pile up this past season. Lewan was named a Walter Camp All-American and Associated Press All-American. He was honored as the Big Ten Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year and selected as a first team All-Big Ten player by Big Ten coaches.

Could Jake Matthews Have Gone No. 1 Overall in the 2013 NFL Draft? Why He’ll Go Early In 2014

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

When Jake Matthews announced in January he would return to Texas A&M for his senior season, it seemed like a smart move for his draft stock. When teammate Luke Joeckel declared for the 2013 NFL draft, it opened up an opportunity for Matthews to play the offensive line’s premier position, left tackle, and improve his draft stock with a great senior year.

One has to wonder if Matthews regrets his decision after seeing how the 2013 NFL draft played out.

Traditionally, the left tackle position has been viewed as a much more valuable position than right tackle. That school of thinking has been challenged recently, however, with more elite pass-rushers including Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt and Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller lining up over the right tackle.

The 2013 draft made a clear statement that teams are now putting high value in both offensive tackle positions. Four offensive tackles were drafted in the top 11 picks, including the Nos. 1, 2 and 4 overall selections. Each of them is projected to play right tackle as a rookie and potentially in future seasons.

If Jake Matthews has a strong senior season, he should be viewed as an elite prospect as both a left and right tackle, and will only help his stock for the 2014 NFL draft. That said, there is reason to believe he may have unknowingly passed up a shot to be the No. 1 or 2 overall pick in 2013.

After breaking down the top 50 prospects in my initial top 100 big board, I am back to give you the rest of the top 100 to digest, with many great players still on the board. This draft class has the makings to be one of the best in a long, long time, with all of these players having the potential to work their way up into the top 50.

*Players with remaining eligibility following the 2013 college football season are asterisked

51. Gabe Jackson, OG, Mississippi State

A pure mauler on the line of scrimmage. Fires off with powerful hands and quick-twitch movements in fundamentals. Has a chance to be a top-20 pick if he can supplant David Yankey on my big board later on.

52. Ra’Shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota

Hageman’s pure size and raw ability will draw scouts’ eyes right when they pop in the tape on him. Even with his more-than-300-pound frame, he moves like a cat. Hageman is reminiscent of an even more athletically-gifted Montori Hughes (Indianapolis Colts’ 5th-round pick from Tennessee-Martin).
