Michael Sam became internationally known after publicly revealing his homosexuality Feb. 9, but NFL scouts and college football fans should have already been well aware of the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year and consensus first-team All-American.

Sam’s revelation is brave and ground-breaking, as he attempts to make it in a league that has never had an active openly gay player.

He should be praised, for his courage could lead the way for other publicly homosexual athletes to receive professional opportunities, and congratulated, for being comfortable with who he is despite the uncertainty and discrimination he likely has faced and will continue to face.

His sexuality, however, says nothing about his ability to play football, which is what ultimately puts him in position to break an NFL barrier.

1. Kansas City Chiefs
QB Geno Smith-West Virginia (Scouting Report)
Many analysts have begun to question if the Chiefs are really prepared to take Geno Smith #1 overall but in the end I think they are. Smith can come and take over the team on Day 1 and despite what many of critics have said he absolutely can be a difference maker. (more…)

1. Kansas City Chiefs

QB Geno Smith-West Virginia (Scouting Report)

This pick isn’t likely to change between now and the draft from my point of view. The Chiefs need a QB more than any team in the NFL and despite some analysts unwillingness to give Geno his due he is the best QB in this class even if he’s not Luck or RGIII. (more…)

2013 NFL Mock Draft Updated: December 27th, 2012

1. Kansas City Chiefs-Geno Smith, QB West Virginia (Scouting Report)
It’s been stating multiple times by everybody doing a mock draft that Smith is not exactly a clear-cut top pick. However, quarterbacks always rise to the top of the draft, and the Chiefs desperately need help under center. Smith has an intriguing blend of size and arm strength and has good safety valves for a rookie in Dwayne Bowe and Tony Moeaki. Behind a solid Chiefs offensive line, he should be able to stay upright enough to work out the kinks and turn into an above-average starting quarterback in the league. (more…)
