With ten offensive tackles being selected in the first round over the past two drafts, the position has cemented itself as a premium in the NFL. General managers are prioritizing having a pair of bookend tackles who can solidify their offensive line.

Michael Sam became internationally known after publicly revealing his homosexuality Feb. 9, but NFL scouts and college football fans should have already been well aware of the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year and consensus first-team All-American.

Sam’s revelation is brave and ground-breaking, as he attempts to make it in a league that has never had an active openly gay player.

He should be praised, for his courage could lead the way for other publicly homosexual athletes to receive professional opportunities, and congratulated, for being comfortable with who he is despite the uncertainty and discrimination he likely has faced and will continue to face.

His sexuality, however, says nothing about his ability to play football, which is what ultimately puts him in position to break an NFL barrier.

The other likely options come down to a DE or OT and neither are huge needs for the Chiefs as of this moment. Smith can come and take over the team on Day 1 and despite what many of critics have said he absolutely can be a difference maker. (more…)

1. Kansas City Chiefs

QB Geno Smith-West Virginia (Scouting Report)

This pick isn’t likely to change between now and the draft from my point of view. The Chiefs need a QB more than any team in the NFL and despite some analysts unwillingness to give Geno his due he is the best QB in this class even if he’s not Luck or RGIII. (more…)
