It’s time for the Buffalo Bills to start thinking about cutting their roster down to size.

Their preseason is more than halfway over, as they have played three exhibition games and only two more to go before the regular season begins. On Aug. 26, the Bills will have to trim their roster from 90 players to 75. Just four days later, the Bills will only be able to have 53 players—the regular-season limit—on their active roster.

In two weeks, the Bills will only have 53 players on their active roster. Over the course of their contests against the New York Giants (Hall of Fame Game), Carolina Panthers (Aug. 8) and Pittsburgh Steelers (Saturday), it has become more clear who those 53 players should be, and which of those players should be leading the depth charts at their respective positions.

After the team’s release of its first unofficial depth chart prior to the Hall of Fame Game, I took my first stab at projecting who the team’s 53 players would be after its final cuts. Going into Week 3—arguably the most important and telling week of the preseason—some depth charts have been reconfigured and four players who were previously left outside now look like they will be sticking around.

The speculation as to how the Buffalo Bills depth chart should stack up this season is far from over, but we now know how the team currently sees it. Prior to their practice Monday evening, the Bills released their first unofficial depth chart of the preseason.

Going into the season, BBD editors Dan Hope and Ryan Talbot ranked the Buffalo Bills’ training camp roster from top to bottom, and at the midseason mark, they went back over the 53-man roster at the time to evaluate the first half of the season. With the 2013 Bills season now completely in the books, it was time to take one more look at the 2013 roster and determine which players were the most, or least, productive this year.

The 53 players ranked are based on the team’s final roster with the exception of wide receiver Cordell Roberson, who was signed prior to the team’s last game to replace strong safety Aaron Williams, who was placed on injured reserve for the final game only. These rankings were intended to evaluate the players only on their performance in the 2013 season, and not to predict which players will be back with the Bills or make the biggest impact on the team in 2014.

Evaluating the AFC East’s 53-Man Rosters by Draft Picks

Confession: I’m obsessed with numbers.

Perhaps it’s the Math teacher in me, but numbers intrigue me. Whenever there’s an opportunity to look at things using numbers, count me in.

A few months back here at Buffalo Bills Draft, I examined the draft success of each AFC East team between 2008-2012. Now three weeks into the season, I wanted to evaluate each roster’s 53-man rosters. How many players were actually drafted by their teams or signed by them out of college as undrafted free agents? What’s the breakdown of players by draft round? Which players have provided the most value to their teams?

Let’s take a look at each AFC East team and how their current 53-man roster was built.

The Buffalo Bills set their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday when they filled their final roster spot with the signing of kicker Dan Carpenter. While the Buffalo Bills could make more changes, even before their season-opening game versus the New England Patriots on Sunday, the Bills have built the framework of what their roster will look like for the 2013 NFL season.

Also on Tuesday, the Bills released an unofficial depth chart in their weekly media release, which gives at least a framework on how the lineups will be structured for Sunday’s game.
