The Buffalo Bills have had, by virtually all accounts, a successful first half of their 2014 season. At 5-3, currently good a four-way tie for sixth place in the AFC, they are right in the thick of the hunt for a playoff spot.

To some, Buffalo’s first-half success is a surprise; to others, it’s a realization of promise that had gone unfulfilled in past seasons. There’s still a second half of the season in which the Bills can either keep winning and end the NFL’s longest postseason drought, or falter as they hit tough games down the stretch.

Either way, the Bills as a whole and many of the individuals on their team deserve praise for how they have played so far. While some Bills need to be better in the second half of the year, others have played integral role in the team’s relative success through eight games.

Prior to training camp, when the Bills had 90 players on their roster and many of them were fighting for a place on the team, we ranked the team from top to bottom. Now that we’re at the midpoint of the Bills season, it’s time to look at how the current 53-man roster stacks up, reclassifying players based upon how they’ve performed so far and how crucial they will be to the team’s second-half results.

Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller, who broke his collarbone in Sunday’s win against the Minnesota Vikings, will be out at least eight weeks after being placed on injured reserve with a return designation Tuesday.

The Bills signed another running back, Phillip Tanner, to replace Spiller on the 53-man roster.

Although the roster formed by the cutdown to 53 players is often considered to be a team’s “final roster,” it was already known that the Buffalo Bills would be making at least one roster move this week in order to add linebacker Nigel Bradham, who was suspended for the team’s first game, back to the active 53-man roster.

The Bills made that move Monday by releasing defensive end Jacquies Smith.

The weekend considered by many around the NFL to be the toughest of the year is underway. All 32 franchises, including the Buffalo Bills, are in the process of making and finalizing difficult decisions as they cut their rosters down to the 53-man regular season limit while Saturday’s 4 p.m. deadline to do so looms.

The Bills released 10 players on Friday, including punter Brian Moorman and defensive tackle Landon Cohen, and placed three others on injured reserve to cut their roster down to 62.

That leaves Buffalo with nine moves still to make by Saturday. One of those moves will be covered by linebacker Nigel Bradham’s Week 1 suspension, which goes into effect Saturday, but the Bills must choose eight others to release or place on reserve lists.

Even then, the Bills’ roster-shaping work won’t be done. It’s likely that the Bills will bring in a number of players cut by other teams, which will force Buffalo to make even more cuts. Additionally, the Bills will both choose from their own released players and scour the waiver wire to build a 10-man practice squad by Sunday.

When the dust finally settles next week and the Bills have their roster set for Week 1, what will it look like and who will join them in practice? There’s still a lot to be determined, but here’s an updated projection following Friday’s latest wave of moves.
