2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Safeties

The need to be able to stop the run out of nickel and dime defensive packages to match up with spread offensive formations has put the safety position in high demand. Having a safety who can come up and play near the line of scrimmage, but also has the range and instincts to play in single-high looks, goes a long way in being able to field an aggressive defensive scheme.

Two prospects in the 2014 NFL draft in particular offer the ability to perform well in both area, and they received first-round grades as a result.

Quick Hits: 2014 East-West Shrine Game

Before the Senior Bowl begins in earnest with practices on Monday, the biggest contest on the pre-draft all-star game schedule thus far came Saturday with the East-West Shrine Game, televised on NFL Network from St. Petersburg, Fla.

The East won Saturday’s game, 23-13, but the final score was essentially meaningless. Instead, the game served as the culmination of a week-long opportunity for 2014 draft prospects to showcase their talents to NFL coaches, scouts and executives in hopes of being among this year’s 256 draft selections.

Which players made impressions, positive or negative, in Saturday’s game? While it’s hard to make any big takeaways from the game, as the practices actually hold more value in the all-star game evaluation process, there were a players who might have made scouts want to go back and take another look at their tape, for better or for worse.

2013 Holiday Bowl Prospect Preview: Arizona State vs. Texas Tech

After a disappointing 38-14 loss to Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship Game that cost them a trip to the Rose Bowl, Arizona State (10-3) will be looking to rebound with a victory over Texas Tech (7-5) in the Holiday Bowl (Monday, 10:15 p.m. ET, ESPN).

The Arizona State defense will be challenged by the nation’s second-ranked passing offense, which features standout tight end Jace Amaro. Several Sun Devils defenders with an NFL future will be relied upon to slow down the Red Raiders’ prolific spread aerial attack.
