With Saturday’s deadline to cut down the roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players, the Buffalo Bills had a busy day Friday. The Bills released 18 players from their roster, while also placing three injured players on the season-ending injured reserve, in order to cut their roster down to 55 players (the roster was at the 75-player limit prior to the 21 moves, but free safety Jairus Byrd’s roster exemption expires Saturday).

The Bills have not made any stunning releases yet, but they have released a few names who both Ryan Talbot and I had on our final roster projections. Conversely, the Bills have a few players still remaining on their roster who neither Ryan nor I expected to make the team.

Analysis: Buffalo Bills Release First Depth Chart of 2013 Preseason

The Buffalo Bills released their first depth chart of the 2013 NFL season on Monday, six days in advance of their preseason opener versus the Indianapolis Colts and in advance of their intrasquad scrimmage scheduled for tonight’s training camp practice.

One should not read too much into preseason depth charts. Teams tend to place veterans high and rookies low on preseason depth charts. The depth chart is very much subject to change over the upcoming month, especially given that the Bills have not even played their first preseason game yet. That said, the depth chart release does give us some insight into the standing of many players competing for starting jobs, playing time and roster spots.

You can take a look at the full depth chart released by the team at the link above, but let’s take a look at some of the points on the depth chart that stand out.

The Buffalo Bills are in the midst of a big week: their opening week of their 2013 training camp. The offseason for Bills players and coaches is over; it’s football season now. Monday will mark the second day of practice in this year’s training camp, as the Bills begin preparation for their first preseason game on Aug. 11 and more importantly, their regular-season opener versus the New England Patriots on Sept. 8.

Previewing Training Camp

Here on Buffalo Bills Draft, it was also an important week as we previewed this year’s Bills training camp.

Our Training Camp Preview includes links to all of our content this offseason that has directly looked ahead to the battles and preparation that are taking place over the next few weeks of camp at St. John Fisher College.

That preview includes all nine installments of Ryan Talbot’s Positional Previews series. The series came to a conclusion this past week with Ryan’s comprehensive looks at the team’s Linebackers, Defensive Backs and Specialists.

Bills Increase Offensive Line Depth with Antoine Caldwell, Tony Hills On Day 1 of Training Camp

One of the most intriguing areas of competition to watch at Buffalo Bills training camp, which begins with its opening practice Sunday evening, will be the offensive line. That competition was increased Sunday, prior to the start of practice, with the team’s announced signings of veteran offensive lineman Antoine Caldwell and Tony Hills.

For a team with one wide-open starting spot at left guard, another possible competition at right tackle and a need for solid depth across the line, Caldwell and Hills were brought in to push the players already in place on the roster.

Caldwell has appeared in 39 games with 19 starts over the course of his first four NFL seasons, all with the Houston Texans. All 19 of those starts in Houston came as a right guard, but he has the versatility to play all three spots on the interior offensive line.
