Cause for Concern: Buffalo Bills Undressed in Dress Rehearsal vs. Washington Redskins

Of all four preseason games, the third preseason game is supposed to be the closest to a regular-season game. Most starters around the league play for an entire half during Week 3 of the preseason, as NFL teams try to get their key players ready for regular-season action before resting them for the most part in the final preseason game on Thursday.

If Saturday’s game versus the Washington Redskins was any indication of how the Buffalo Bills will look when the real season begins, the Bills could be in for another long season. The Bills struggled mightily on both sides of the ball Saturday, and lost the game by a final score of 30-7.

That said, there’s no reason to harp on the final score: preseason results are ultimately meaningless and are often misleading. What are significant, however, are the reasons that the Bills ended up giving up so many points and scoring so few, as there were plenty of takeaways from Saturday’s game that could be cause for concern.

2013 Buffalo Bills Positional Previews: Linebackers

The Buffalo Bills overhauled numerous positions this offseason. The wide receiver changes seem to be getting the most attention, but the linebacker corps looks vastly different from the 2012 squad. Seven of the 11 players listed as linebackers on Buffalo’s roster are entering their first season with the Bills.

When the Bills’ 53-man roster was announced last season, seven linebackers made the cut. Linebackers on the Bills may be in for some good news however if Mike Pettine, the team’s defensive coordinator, has a say. In 2011 and 2012, the Jets carried nine linebackers on their opening 53-man rosters. It seems as though depth at the linebacker position was valued by Pettine and Rex Ryan in New York.

Let’s take a look at the 11 linebackers currently on the Bills’ roster, with each listed according to their position on the Bills’ official team roster.

Buffalo Bills Draft’s sixth installment of “Grading the Buffalo Bills’ 2010 NFL Draft” takes a look at Arthur Moats.

Round 6, Pick 178 : Arthur Moats, DE/LB, James Madison

Buffalo addressed the defensive side of the ball again in Round 6 of the 2010 NFL draft when they selected Arthur Moats. Moats played in the FCS at James Madison University. He was awarded the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player in the FCS, in his senior season. Moats received 15 first place votes and had a total of 342 points. It was the largest winning margin in the history of the Buchanan Award at the time.

“It’s really exciting. It’s the top honor you could win, as far as a defensive player individually,” Moats told WHSV after winning the award. “And I just feel I’m solidified now in history.”

Buffalo hoped they had found a diamond in the rough at linebacker for their 3-4 defense.

Preseason Week 2 – Bills v. Vikings Preview

On Friday the Bills will take the field against the Minnesota Vikings for the second pre-season game of the year. The starters will begin to extend their time on the field and the depth chart will shake out a little more clearly. With Adrian Peterson not likely to suit up for Minnesota, there isn’t a lot of firepower on the other side of the field, but there are still a lot of questions to be answered by the Bills alone.
