With Saturday’s deadline to cut down the roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players, the Buffalo Bills had a busy day Friday. The Bills released 18 players from their roster, while also placing three injured players on the season-ending injured reserve, in order to cut their roster down to 55 players (the roster was at the 75-player limit prior to the 21 moves, but free safety Jairus Byrd’s roster exemption expires Saturday).

The Bills have not made any stunning releases yet, but they have released a few names who both Ryan Talbot and I had on our final roster projections. Conversely, the Bills have a few players still remaining on their roster who neither Ryan nor I expected to make the team.

A lot has changed for the Buffalo Bills as they head into their final preseason showdown versus the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.

In the course of one week, the Bills have seen the return of arguably their best defender (free safety Jairus Byrd), lost their best cornerback (Stephon Gilmore) to injury, released a once-heralded potential sleeper (wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers) and with quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb both injured, could become the first team to start an undrafted rookie quarterback in their season opener in the common draft era.

Amidst all of those changes, the team still has some tough decisions to make in regards to who will make their regular-season roster. With starting jobs still on the line, valuable reserve spots up for grabs and injuries suddenly opening new opportunities, the final preseason game is truly important for many players on the roster.

Buffalo Bills Players With Most to Prove vs. Minnesota Vikings

The Buffalo Bills put their best foot forward Sunday, opening the 2013 NFL preseason with a 44-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts and setting a franchise record for preseason points. Rookie quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel each played one half, throwing for 315 combined yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Overall, it was an impressive performance for Buffalo and head coach Doug Marrone, but there is still a lot of change on the horizon.

Although many players impressed in their first game action, some were less than stellar. For every player who tried to lay claim to a starting job or a spot on the 53-man roster, there were an equal amount that saw their chances worsen after the first game action.

With that in mind, here are a few players who will come into the second preseason game against Minnesota with even more pressure on their shoulders.

2013 Buffalo Bills Positional Previews: Specialists

Offense and defense have already been covered in my Positional Previews at Buffalo Bills Draft, so there’s just one area left to discuss: specialists. Buffalo actually has some interesting competitions at both kicker and punter to follow at training camp.

Another area to focus on is in the return game. Leodis McKelvin was far and away Buffalo’s best return man last season, but this season he is the team’s second cornerback. Will Buffalo use McKelvin as much in the return game?

Here’s a look at all of Buffalo’s positional battles at specialist positions.

2013 Buffalo Bills Positional Previews: Wide Receivers

Revamp. If there’s one word that I would use to describe the difference in the Buffalo Bills’ wide receiver roster from 2012 to 2013, it would be revamp. The Bills said goodbye to three of their receivers from last season’s roster (Donald Jones, David Nelson and Ruvell Martin). When the team makes its final cuts, I expect there to be at least one more wide receiver added to the “goodbye” list.

This offseason, the Bills decided against tendering both Donald Jones and David Nelson, with Nelson coming off of a torn ACL. The Bills made it apparent that they were going to add wide receivers to their roster via free agency or the NFL draft.

Free agency came and went and no wide receivers were added, but they addressed the position in the draft. The Bills selected USC’s Robert Woods in Round 2 and Texas’ Marquise Goodwin in Round 3. The Bills also numerous wide receivers as undrafted free agents, including troubled but talented wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers.

On paper, the Bills took an area of weakness at wide receiver and turned it into one of strength. Expectations will be high for Stevie Johnson and his company among the Bills’ receiving corps in 2013.
