If you don’t think there’s a place and demand for small explosive receivers in the NFL, you haven’t been paying attention to the first rounds of the last two drafts. In 2013, the St. Louis Rams traded up with the Buffalo Bills to acquire the No. 8 overall pick and select Tavon Austin, a West Virginia product who is listed at 5’8” and 176 pounds. In similar fashion, the New Orleans Saints traded up seven spots to the No. 20 overall pick in this year’s first round to draft 5’10″, 189-pound Oregon State wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

Listed at 5’9” and 175 pounds by Duke’s official athletics website, senior wide receiver Jamison Crowder is built similarly to Cooks and Austin while possessing a comparable skill set to the recent first-rounders.

Just when I thought I was done with all forms of mock drafts, they pull me back in. The 2014 NFL draft is just one day away, so to celebrate in a sick and twisted way, I mocked the first round of the draft. Using the latest draft talk and look at team needs, I put together my first and only full first-round projection for the 2014 draft.

With seven players graded in the first round and 11 in the first two rounds, this is one of the best wide receiver classes I have ever scouted. Quality prospects with exciting playmaking potential can be found in each round of the 2014 draft.

Sammy Watkins is the premier talent in the group. He has a bright NFL future ahead of him. His value rivals that of top-tier prospects like AJ Green and Julio Jones, who were both selected in the top six of the 2011 NFL draft.

36 receivers in this year’s class have draftable grades, making this the year for teams to add weapons to their offenses.

The wide receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks took center stage on Day 2 of the on-field portion of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday, with the receivers’ light shining the brightest of the trio of positions.

In one of the deepest wide receiver classes in recent memory, several top prospects solidified their draft status, second-tier players made a push up the board, and some late-round guys had excellent on-field showings.

Boise State (8-5) faced Oregon State (7-6) in the Hawaii Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 in one of three matchups this bowl season between Mountain West and Pac-12 teams.

Oregon State dominated the first half, leading 31-6 at halftime in part thanks to two fumble return touchdowns by cornerback Rashaad Reynolds. While Boise State closed the gap with a few second-half scores, they could not overcome the deficit and Oregon State won 38-23.

Reynolds was one of a number of 2014 NFL draft prospects to impress in this games.
