The Buffalo Bills weren’t able to come out on top in regulation, but they were able to pull together a win in overtime against the Chicago Bears, on the road, in their 2014 regular season opener.

Buffalo won the turnover battle, three to one, and had overall solid performances from all three of its units: offense, defense and special teams.

What did Buffalo do well to start its season with a one in the W column, and what must it do better to continue winning games and do so without needing overtime? The Buffalo Bills stayed busy on Labor Day in their preparations for their season opener against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. On Monday, the Bills released their first in-season depth chart of the year, announced their six team captains and continued to make additions to their practice squad.

The Buffalo Bills have finished among the NFL’s bottom five in run defense in every season since 2009. As part of their effort to stop that trend, the Bills agreed to terms with former New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes, who has been rated by Pro Football Focus (subscription required) as the NFL’s No. 1 inside linebacker in run defense in each of the past two seasons, on a one-year deal.

A large factor in the Bills’ inability to stop the run has been their inconsistent play from the linebacker position. Spikes, along with Keith Rivers and two draft picks, were added this offseason to provide consistent play at a position group that has been lacking stability in recent years.

Brandon Spikes Could Be the Answer to Buffalo Bills’ Problems on Run Defense

The Buffalo Bills continued to bulk up their defensive front seven Friday by signing former New England Patriots middle linebacker Brandon Spikes. The deal, which was first reported by This Given Sunday’s Chris Trapasso Friday afternoon and confirmed by the team early Saturday morning, is a one-year deal worth $3.25 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The new addition could be the missing piece for Buffalo’s talented-yet-flawed front seven.
