The Buffalo Bills have a new general manager in Doug Whaley, all but one of their draft picks is now signed and while the offseason still has a few more months remaining, organized team activities (OTA’s) got underway in Buffalo last week. Meanwhile, we here at Buffalo Bills Draft not only kept up with the general manager switch, but also began to look ahead to the 2014 NFL draft and continued looking ahead to the Bills’ upcoming season.

BBD on the Bills

Breaking Down the 2014 NFL Draft’s Top Prospects

  • Staff writer Evan Sidery explained why South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is a “once-in-a-generation” prospect.
  • I explained why Teddy Bridgewater is the favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick, complete with a breakdown of his game, even in a draft class that includes Clowney.
  • Texas A&M offensive tackle Jake Matthews may have been the No. 1 overall pick had he declared for the 2013 NFL Draft. I broke down why he’ll be an early selection in 2014.
  • Staff writer Joe Marino previewed the 2014 NFL Draft’s other top offensive tackle, Michigan’s Taylor Lewan.

More on the Bills

  • Chris Brown of provided updates from each of the three days of the Bills’ first OTA: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3
  • Second-round pick wide receiver Robert Woods became the seventh of Buffalo’s eight draft pick to sign his rookie contract, signing a four-year deal according to’s James Walker.
  • On a more serious note, star Bills defensive end Mario Williams is going through some off-field issues in messy legal proceedings with his ex-fiance. A story by the Houston Chronicle‘s David Barron revealed text messages from Williams to his ex-fiance in which he mentioned hydrocodone abuse and suicidal thoughts.

Around the NFL Draft Sites Network

  • In a guest column for NEPatriotsDraft, I questioned Bill Belichick’s affinity toward drafting players who played for current Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano at Rutgers.
  • The Buffalo Bills shouldn’t be in the market for a quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft. For teams who are, Marc Sluis of NY Jets Draft bought or sold each of the draft class’ top signal-caller prospects.

Grading the Buffalo Bills’ 2010 NFL Draft: C.J. Spiller

Monday, May 20th, 2013

As an educator, I place letter grades on papers daily. It’s important for students to know how they did on a particular assignment. Simply put, grades are important.

However, not everything should be graded. I’m sure you can see where I’m headed with this, but if not I’ll make it crystal clear. I hate NFL draft grades that are given out before the players have even seen the field.

Personally, I’ve always felt that giving players three to four years is a sufficient amount of time in the NFL. By the end of three years, you should have an idea of how good a player is going to be; in a few cases, it takes a fourth year.

In light of Buddy Nix stepping down as Bills general manager, we here at Buffalo Bills Draft thought it would be as good of a time as ever to evaluate his first draft class: the 2010 NFL Draft.

First up to get his report card? C.J. Spiller.

As expected, the Buffalo Bills promoted assistant general manager Doug Whaley to general manager Thursday, three days following Buddy Nix’s resignation from the position.

Whaley has been with the Bills since February 2010 as assistant GM, and signed a contract extension with the Bills this February, which put him in position as the heir apparent to the GM position once Nix stepped down.

Brandon said he made the announcement to name Whaley general manager “with great pleasure.”

Weigh in with your thoughts on Buddy Nix’s tenure as Bills general manager! (Photo: USA Today Sports Images)

Buddy Nix’s more than three years as Buffalo Bills general manager came to an end Monday, when he announced his resignation in a team statement. Nix will remain with the franchise as a special assistant, but will no longer be in charge of personnel decisions. While the team has not yet named a successor, his position is widely expected to be filled by assistant GM Doug Whaley, who signed a contract extension with the organization in February.

Now it’s your chance, Buffalo Bills Draft readers, to weigh in. How would you grade Nix’s tenure as Bills general manager? What were his best and worst decisions, and which will define his time as Bills GM? Will his decision to step down have a positive or negative effect on the Bills going forward? Start the discussion by posting your comments in the thread below the article.
