Looking Back to Move Forward: Storylines of the First Half of the Buffalo Bills’ Season

Thursday, October 31st, 2013

Sitting at three wins and five losses at the midpoint of the season, the overall numbers might not seem to be working in the favor of the Buffalo Bills, yet it seems clear the Bills are generally moving in the right direction. Of the team’s five losses, three of them were by seven points or less — including two on game-winning field goals — and one, against the Cleveland Browns in Week 5, came when undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel was the only option to finish the game at quarterback after EJ Manuel suffered an LCL sprain that has kept him out ever since.

The new coaching staff led by Doug Marrone, and general manager Doug Whaley, have acquitted themselves well. Even with a losing record, there is more reason for optimism with the Bills than there has in the past. But, as I learned in history class: if you don’t study your past, you’re destined to repeat it, which means it’s time to look back at the Bills’ first half and see what mistakes they can learn from to make positive progress.

It’s far too early into Doug Marrone’s coaching tenure to know if the Buffalo Bills picked the right man for the job, but I like that Marrone is not afraid to make roster moves.

On Tuesday, Marrone decided he had seen enough from Colin Brown, and the Buffalo Bills officially announced the release of their left guard who started their first five games of the season.

The Buffalo Bills lost another close game on Sunday to the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-24 in overtime. The Bills currently sit at 2-4, but they’ve been in every game they’ve played this season. A big reason for Buffalo’s competitiveness is the talent on their team.

Starting this week, Making the Grade will take a look at Pro Football Focus‘ weekly ratings of Buffalo Bills players. If you aren’t familiar with Pro Football Focus (PFF for short) the site uses analytics to grade players (subscription required to access the database). A 0.0 weekly grade is considered average, regardless of position. When discussing each player’s performance, a breakdown will be given of the individual categories that make up the player’s overall grade.

Here’s a look at some Bills players who rumbled, or played well, against the Bengals, followed by some who stumbled, or didn’t play well.

First Downs and Flags: Post-Mortem of Buffalo Bills’ Loss to Cleveland Browns

Monday, October 7th, 2013

Thursday night should be looked at as a lost opportunity for the Buffalo Bills. A streaky game that started with promise ended with the Bills dropping a 37-24 decision to the Cleveland Browns.

The game was there for the taking for the banged-up Bills, who struggled all night to stay healthy and maintain consistency on offense. The game will be remembered by EJ Manuel’s fight to gain some extra yards on a scramble deep in Cleveland territory in the third quarter, which ultimately resulted in Manuel taking a hit and sustaining a sprained knee that will keep him out for “a few weeks.”

As Bills nation collectively gasped with horror when Manuel was injured, Buffalo was left with little offensive talent. Although the Bills finished that drive with a 1-yard Fred Jackson touchdown to take a 24-17 lead, the offense was unable to produce once Jeff Tuel took Manuel’s place in the game at quarterback.

Yet even with a tough loss and the injuries piling up, there were still some positives to take from Thursday’s game.

Contrary to coach Doug Marrone’s claim Friday that the Buffalo Bills would look to add a quarterback from “outside the organization,” they are elevating Thad Lewis from their practice squad to start their next game Sunday versus the Cincinnati Bengals, the team announced Monday.
