The Buffalo Bills’ roster moves of Thursday weren’t nearly as splashy as the trades they made Tuesday and Wednesday, but they were roster moves nonetheless. The Bills tendered three exclusive rights free agents—wide receivers Chris Hogan and Justin Brown, plus defensive tackle Corbin Bryant—which will keep all three players in the fold for the 2015 season.

The Buffalo Bills have released defensive tackle Alan Branch.

Branch was arrested Saturday morning and charged with a DWI after police saw him vomiting out of the driver side door of his car. He failed a sobriety test and had a blood-alcohol content of .14. Branch was inactive from yesterday’s game against the Buccaneers and wasn’t on the sidelines during the game.

Branch had signed a three-year extension on December 23rd to remain with the Bills. He was a strong fit in Mike Pettine’s defense, but didn’t fit as well into Jim Schwartz’s defense.

This season, Branch didn’t endear himself to his new defensive coaches. Branch did not report to voluntary OTAs. At the time, Doug Marrone said he had not heard from Branch or Manny Lawson, another veteran who did not report.

I haven’t talked to them. It’s voluntary. We all know that,” coach Doug Marrone said. “I tend to not worry about the things that I can’t control, and obviously I can’t control that.

When Branch reported to training camp, he was placed on the non-football illness list after failing his conditioning test. With Branch off the field, players such as Corbin Bryant, Stefan Charles and Landon Cohen gained valuable reps. In the preseason, all three performed well and Branch was pushed further and further down the depth chart.

In the team’s third preseason game against the Steelers, Branch didn’t enter the game until late in the second half. Speculation began that Branch was at risk of being released. His DWI was most certainly the final nail in the coffin.

The Buffalo Bills went into Friday night’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers with one distinct advantage: while the contest was the first game action of the year for the Panthers, the Bills had already strapped on the pads Sunday night for the Hall of Fame Game against the New York Giants. The Bills parlayed that advantage into a 20-18 victory.

The team can some pride in its win, but it shouldn’t take any time to celebrate. Preseason victories, though better than losses, are essentially meaningless. There are still many things the Bills need to be doing better to consistently win games in the regular season. However, there were some promising areas of progress in Friday’s game, especially in the play of quarterback EJ Manuel and the Bills offense.

The Buffalo Bills had a rough game in many ways in their 27-20 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, including on the injury front. Five Bills starters — cornerback Leodis McKelvin, running back C.J. Spiller and defensive linemen Mario Williams, Marcell Dareus and Alex Carrington — all left Sunday’s game early with injuries, while wide receiver Stevie Johnson also appeared to jam his wrist in the first quarter, but played the rest of the game.

Carrington, who had to be carted off the field, took the worst of the injury bug. Carrington suffered a quadriceps tear and was placed on season-ending injured reserve, the team announced Monday.
