The Buffalo Bills entered Sunday’s matchup against the Oakland Raiders with their playoff hopes still intact, only to squander the opportunity in a 26-24 loss at the O.co Coliseum. Rekindling memories of the Bills’ heartbreaking 2004 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo was unable to overcome injuries and another inept offensive performance on their way to a 15th consecutive season without a playoff berth.

The Bills defense gave up a couple big passing plays and was vulnerable against the run, which led to a below-average performance for this typically stellar unit. The offense had three passing touchdowns of 25-plus yards, but it was unable to get anything going on the ground.

It’s not a good week for the Buffalo Bills to desperately need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

While the Bills can be glad to return home, still owning a winning record and still sitting just one game back of a wild card spot, their final game in Orchard Park this year comes against the Green Bay Packers, who own the NFL’s longest active winning streak at five games.

No team in the league has been playing better than Green Bay. The Packers have won nine of their last 10 games, a span in which they have outscored their opponents by 14.4 points per game on average.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been both the catalyst and backbone of the Packers’ success. Having thrown 35 touchdowns this year versus just three interceptions, while he leads the league with 8.78 passing yards per attempt, Rodgers has emerged as the clear-cut choice—barring a shocking collapse—to be the NFL MVP for this season.

Rodgers and the Packers offense, which leads the league with 32.5 points per game, has looked nearly unstoppable, especially in recent weeks (they’ve averaged 40.2 points per game over the course of their active winning streak). If anyone is equipped to slow down Green Bay, however, it might be the Bills, especially with the advantage of playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Buffalo Bills visited Mile High Stadium in Denver with playoff aspirations on Sunday, but ultimately fell short as the Broncos held on for a 24-17 victory. The Bills got as close as an attempted onside kick at the end of the game but couldn’t complete the comeback, which all but ends their chances of playing in the postseason.

The offensive unit for Buffalo had a tough time capitalizing on the three turnovers that the defense forced for them. In usual fashion, it sputtered for most of the game until finally picking it up in the fourth quarter, which slightly improved its grades. The defense did not record a sack but played tough against Denver’s Peyton Manning-led offense, giving its offense an opportunity to win the game.

The Buffalo Bills officially lost one of their starters for the rest of the season when they placed cornerback Leodis McKelvin, who fractured his ankle against the Miami Dolphins, on injured reserve Monday.

McKelvin, a seventh-year cornerback who has spent entire career in Buffalo, played in each of the Bills’ first 10 games this season and started nine of them. He had 48 total tackles and held the team lead with four interceptions.

The Buffalo Bills are right in the thick of the AFC playoff race, currently sitting in a four-way tie for sixth place with a record of 5-3. The defense has really carried the team while the offense has been opportunistic enough to contribute to the winning record.

Overall through eight games, many defensive players have graded out very well while the offensive players have been more boom or bust in terms of individual performances.
