At least one offensive tackle has been selected among the first 10 selections in every draft but one (2005) since 2000. Premier talents like Jake Matthews and Greg Robinson, who I compared in-depth earlier this draft season, make it a near certainty that the trend will continue this year.

It would not be surprising to see Taylor Lewan join that mix and make this year’s draft the second consecutive with three top-10 offensive tackle selections.

An average of 19 offensive tackles have been selected in the last five drafts. I have draftable grades on 23 tackles this year which is a testament to the depth of this class. Intriguing offensive tackle talents can be found in every round of this year’s draft.

Michigan (7-5) is coming off a last-minute loss to archrival Ohio State on a failed two-point conversion attempt as it heads into the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (Saturday, 10:15 p.m., ESPN). It was the best the Wolverine offense looked all season but was yet another loss in a long and disappointing season. Similarly, Kansas State (7-5) struggled through an up and down season after losing some key players to the NFL draft, and will be back in Tempe, Arizona for its second straight appearance in this bowl game.

Despite disappointing seasons for both teams, Saturday will be a chance for them to head into the offseason on a high note.

If Kansas State can push the Michigan offensive line back, as opponents have against the Wolverines all season to the tune of 108 tackles for loss (most allowed in the FBS), the Wildcats could put pressure on freshman quarterback Shane Morris, who is being forced into action after Devin Gardner broke his foot. But if Michigan is able to get its playmakers like Jeremy Gallon, Devin Funchess and Fitzgerald Toussaint into space, it could take the pressure off its line and its young quarterback and really open the game up.

The 2013 NFL draft proved that offensive tackle is considered one of the league’s premier positions, as three offensive tackles were selected among the first four selections. The top offensive tackle in this year’s senior class, Texas A&M’s Jake Matthews, may be even better than last year’s offensive tackles.

The team who draft Matthews will likely not have to worry about their left tackle spot for a long time. Overall, the senior class of offensive tackles for the 2014 NFL draft has good depth, with many players who have starter upside.

The Big 12 Conference has been a big producer of elite talent for years. The conference has had at least one player selected in the top five picks every year since 2009, and have accounted for 36 percent of top-five selections (9 of 25) in that five-year span.

The Big 12 has also produced draft depth in addition to elite talent. 22 Big 12 players were selected in the 2013 NFL draft, which tied for fourth with the Big Ten Conference.

Let’s take a look at some of the sleeper prospects of the Big 12 who could help make up that depth in the 2014 NFL draft.
