With Saturday’s deadline to cut down the roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players, the Buffalo Bills had a busy day Friday. The Bills released 18 players from their roster, while also placing three injured players on the season-ending injured reserve, in order to cut their roster down to 55 players (the roster was at the 75-player limit prior to the 21 moves, but free safety Jairus Byrd’s roster exemption expires Saturday).

The Bills have not made any stunning releases yet, but they have released a few names who both Ryan Talbot and I had on our final roster projections. Conversely, the Bills have a few players still remaining on their roster who neither Ryan nor I expected to make the team.

To call Monday afternoon’s practice uneventful would be an understatement. To be fair, Buffalo had a preseason game on Sunday and flew back into Rochester, N.Y. Sunday evening. While the practice was a bit light, there is still plenty to talk about.

Quarterback Rotation

Buffalo’s three quarterbacks took time working with the offense Monday. Of the three, EJ Manuel exhibited the best natural arm. Manuel connected on a deep pass to Chris Hogan early in the practice. The ball was perfectly placed and Hogan caught the ball in stride. Later in the practice, Manuel dialed up another deep pass, this one intended for Robert Woods. Manuel’s throw was on the money, but Crezdon Butler broke up the pass at the last possible second.

Sunday night marked the long-awaited return of the AMC television hit Breaking Bad. While the world awaits the fate of Walter White, Buffalo Bills fans received a brief glimpse into their possible 2013 fate on Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis.

A film review of Sunday’s game has given Buffalo their own version of players who decided, in their season debut with the Bills, to “break bad.” In an effort to remain positive, we will also look at some players who broke bad habits and had a positive debut on Sunday.

Our first installment of “5 Up, 5 Down” for the Bills’ 2013 preseason looks at players who helped or hurt their case to make the Buffalo Bills roster and/or earn greater playing time, although I tried to keep my focus on rookies and players on the bubble to make the team.

Final scores are meaningless in the preseason, but Buffalo Bills fans are wishing that wasn’t the case after the team’s 44-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, an AFC playoff team last season, in their preseason opener Sunday.

There was a lot to like about the Bills’ preseason opener Sunday. Rookie quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel combined to complete 35 of 44 passing attempts for 315 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. In addition to their three passing touchdowns, the Bills also scored touchdowns on defense (interception return by Jumal Rolle) and special teams (kickoff return by Marquise Goodwin).

Manuel, Tuel, Rolle and Goodwin were all among the standouts on Sunday’s first slice of game action for the Buffalo Bills’ 2013 season. Let’s go in-depth and take a closer look at what worked — and a little bit of what didn’t — in the Bills’ impressive preseason outing today.

There is a cautious optimism about Buffalo’s defense this year. Fans are looking forward to a more aggressive defense under new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine after witnessing last year’s vanilla defense under Dave Wannstedt. But for Buffalo’s defense to be successful, the defensive backs need to hold their own against their opposition.

During his time in New York, Mike Pettine had cornerbacks like Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie to depend on and decent safeties last season in LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell. The only proven player in Buffalo’s secondary is Jairus Byrd, and he is yet to sign his franchise tender.

Can Buffalo’s secondary do enough to allow Pettine to blitz as much as he would like? Here are Buffalo’s current options in the secondary and what you can expect from them in 2013.
