There are plenty of talented defensive tackles available in the 2014 NFL Draft but the group as a whole lacks players with a complete skill set. Some of the prospects are stout run defenders who lack pass-rush ability; others are undersized prospects who are good penetrators but will struggle to hold up against NFL defensive linemen.

Aaron Donald headlines the defensive tackle class. Donald is an explosive penetrating defensive tackle who wrecks havoc on the interior. Donald has incredible first-step quickness and strength out of his stance that is troubling for guards to handle. He has quick, violent hands which he utilizes to beat his opponent. He has the strength to dispose of blockers and make plays in the backfield.

From morning weigh-ins to media night, there was plenty to see and hear for the NFL coaches, scouts, executives, media and at the two practices in between, the fans, during the Monday kickoff of Senior Bowl week.

With no full pads, players just getting used to working with one another and their coaches, and a schedule/travel situation that made it virtually impossible to see the entirety of both of Monday’s practice sessions, they might not have been as quite as valuable as those to come Tuesday and Wednesday. Still, the players on the field knew full well that their every move was up for evaluation, and some shined while others struggled.

2014 NFL Draft Prospect to Watch: Tennessee DT Daniel McCullers

Thursday, May 23rd, 2013

BBD Staff Writer: Joe Marino

There was quite the buzz about defensive tackle Daniel McCullers when he signed with the University of Tennessee after playing junior college football at Georgia Military College. It’s been rumored that McCullers is one of the largest men to ever wear a Volunteer uniform. He’s known to have weighed as much as 400 pounds, but is listed anywhere between 360 and 380 pounds while standing 6’8″, according to Tennessee’s official website.

McCullers finished his first year at Tennessee with 39 tackles, 5.5 for loss and one sack. Those are solid numbers for a guy who is asked to occupy blockers and allow linebackers to run and make plays. The 2013 season will be pivotal in figuring out if McCullers is worthy of a first-round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.
