Mike Loyko, who covers the New England Patriots for NE Patriots Draft, recently took the time to share his thoughts with Buffalo Bills Draft on new Buffalo defensive line coach Pepper Johnson. Johnson spent the past fourteen years on New England’s coaching staff as assistant linebackers coach (2000), inside linebackers coach (2001-03), defensive line coach (2004-11) and most recently, linebackers coach (2012-13).

The Buffalo Bills have had arguably the NFL’s best defensive line this season, but there might be reason for concern with one of their starting defensive linemen heading into the 2014 offseason. For the second straight week, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus served an in-game suspension — this time for the entire first half against the New England Patriots — for a violation of team rules.

With seven sacks in Sunday’s shutout win against the Miami Dolphins and an NFL-leading 56 sacks this season, the Buffalo Bills’ pass-rush is on a roll. The franchise made a move to keep that pass-rush in tact by signing defensive lineman Alan Branch to a contract extension.

With Positional Previews finished for the offensive side of the ball (see the bottom of page 2 for links to all five of them), it’s time to preview the Buffalo Bills’ defensive side of the ball in the next three installments.

The Bills defense was woeful in 2012. The defense under Dave Wannstedt, who lasted only one season as defensive coordinator, was as vanilla as it comes. It showed at the end of the season. For the season, Buffalo gave up 435 total points and 362.9 yards per game.

Expectations are different in 2013, however. Wannstedt has been replaced with Mike Pettine, formerly of the New York Jets. Pettine plans on being far more aggressive than his predecessor and give multiple defensive looks. For Buffalo’s defense to be successful, the defensive line will have to perform much better than last season.

Buffalo currently has 13 defensive linemen on their roster. Some of them are absolute locks to make the team, but there are a few veterans at risk.
