The Buffalo Bills visited Mile High Stadium in Denver with playoff aspirations on Sunday, but ultimately fell short as the Broncos held on for a 24-17 victory. The Bills got as close as an attempted onside kick at the end of the game but couldn’t complete the comeback, which all but ends their chances of playing in the postseason.

The offensive unit for Buffalo had a tough time capitalizing on the three turnovers that the defense forced for them. In usual fashion, it sputtered for most of the game until finally picking it up in the fourth quarter, which slightly improved its grades. The defense did not record a sack but played tough against Denver’s Peyton Manning-led offense, giving its offense an opportunity to win the game.

Buffalo Bills’ Playoff Chances Fall as Kyle Orton Shows Ugly Side

For the first three quarters, Kyle Orton and the Buffalo Bills offense could not get of their own way in Sunday’s one-touchdown, 24-17 loss at the Denver Broncos. The Bills defense kept them in striking distance with another dominant performance, but Buffalo’s offense awoke far too late in the game to stage a miraculous comeback.

In principle, the Bills are still very much alive in the playoff chase due to helpful losses by the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins. However, the team showed it may not be ready to take the next step through its brutal four-game finish of the 2014 season.

Sunday begins the quadrant of the Buffalo Bills’ season in that, if the games were played on paper, we should already know who the winner of each of the final four games will be. The Bills should have one easy win in front of them when they play the Oakland Raiders in Week 15, but the other three games—all against teams who have 9-3 records so far this season—look to be likely losses.

The first of those three games comes against the Denver Broncos, at 4:25 p.m. Sunday at Denver’s Sports Authority Field. If the Bills are going to come up with a victory—one they need to keep themselves in position to make the playoffs—they’re going to have to do so against a team that has won all six of its home games this year.

Buffalo Bills in the Playoff Hunt, But Odds Remain Against Them

Defense has been the name of the game for the Buffalo Bills in 2014. Nothing changed much in a 26-10 comeback win over the Cleveland Browns on the final Sunday in November. The Bills kept their dream of making the playoffs alive and forced their opponent to bench a starting quarterback for the second consecutive week—a trend that probably won’t continue next week in Denver. Once again Kyle Orton reverted to the Mr. Hyde version of himself, but was bailed out by arguably the Bills’ strongest defensive performance of the season.

It’s hard not to be excited following a Week 13 win with some relevance. The fact that it’s been 12 years since Buffalo has been 7-5 after 12 games is both exhilarating and nauseating. A league built upon the foundation of parity has not extended its gift of occasional good fortune to snowy Western New York for quite some time and getting caught up in the hoopla is to be expected.

I also would not fault anyone for being sourly pessimistic about the Bills’ playoff hopes, despite a mark many fans should be happy with to this point. After all this is the Buffalo Bills, a team who has not made the postseason since 1999, we are talking about.

For two big reasons, 2014 is unlikely to be the year the Bills finally break the Curse of Doug Flutie.

Bills versus Packers on Monday Night Football? Nope.

Okay, how about the rumored Thanksgiving matchup with the Detroit Lions? Not happening. In fact, the new scheduling allowed the Lions to get around playing the Bills or Miami Dolphins.

Buffalo’s schedule was released (a bit early) over at the team’s official website, and the Bills only have one primetime game: A week 11 Thursday Night Football game with the Dolphins.
