The Buffalo Bills won a roller-coaster game Sunday, with a 14-point comeback over the Detroit Lions that was the team’s first double-digit comeback win since beating the New England Patriots in Week 3 of the 2011 season. The effort to win that game started last Monday, when the Bills announced a quarterback change.

In what I would have to think was at least a semi-intentional troll job, the Detroit Lions played the Foo Fighters classic “My Hero” through the loudspeakers of Ford Field after new Buffalo Bills starting quarterback and Dave Grohl look-alike Kyle Orton led the Bills to their first touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter.

Ultimately, however, it was a kicker who looks like Kid Rock who was the hero for Buffalo on Sunday, as Dan Carpenter made a 58-yard field goal — the second-longest made kick in team history — with just four seconds remaining to propel to the Bills to a 17-14 victory, improving their record to 3-2 for the season.

If you missed Thursday’s Buffalo Bills preseason finale because of the local blackout in Western New York, you didn’t miss much. The Bills fans who watched it might already be trying to erase the game from their memory.

The Bills lost, 23-0, against the Detroit Lions to finish their preseason with a 1-4 record.

Thursday’s score will not matter as the regular season begins next week. Neither will any team’s preseason record. That said, the Bills will need to play drastically better, especially on offense, to have any chance of emerging as a contender and avoid giving the Cleveland Browns a very high selection with the first-round pick they traded to Cleveland in the Sammy Watkins deal this year.

The final week of the preseason is rarely exciting, but the Buffalo Bills’ preseason finale gave plenty of reasons for fans of the team to be discouraged going into the regular season. Despite playing starters on both offense and defense in the first quarter, the Bills lost, 23-0, to finish the preseason with a 1-4 record.

The score and record will be long forgotten when the Bills play their regular-season opener 10 days from Thursday, but they certainly didn’t want to end the exhibition season by being shut out.

The story of the Bills’ struggles throughout the month of August was the first-team offense’s inability to put together even one touchdown drive against a starting defense. Manuel and the group around him continued to struggle Thursday, and have to play much better for the Bills to stand any chance in their regular season opener versus the Chicago Bears.
