With Saturday’s deadline to cut down the roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players, the Buffalo Bills had a busy day Friday. The Bills released 18 players from their roster, while also placing three injured players on the season-ending injured reserve, in order to cut their roster down to 55 players (the roster was at the 75-player limit prior to the 21 moves, but free safety Jairus Byrd’s roster exemption expires Saturday).

The Bills have not made any stunning releases yet, but they have released a few names who both Ryan Talbot and I had on our final roster projections. Conversely, the Bills have a few players still remaining on their roster who neither Ryan nor I expected to make the team.

The preseason is halfway over and the Buffalo Bills have some important roster decisions to make in the near future. On Aug. 31, the Bills and all other NFL teams must cut their rosters down to 53 players. While some cuts will be easy, there are plenty of Bills who are currently on the bubble.

Just in case you aren’t familiar with the term, a bubble player is someone on the edge of making the Bills’ regular season roster. Take a look at some of Buffalo’s bubble players, and where I think they currently stand in terms of a final roster spot.

2013 Buffalo Bills Positional Previews: Fullbacks and Tight Ends

The American Buffalo was at risk of becoming endangered. Fullbacks on the Buffalo Bills can relate, as the team hasn’t utilized the position consistently in years.

Former Bills fullback Corey McIntyre had just nine carries over the course of the last five years in which he was the Bills’ fullback.

The tight end position, however, has potential under new Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. The Chan Gailey regime utilized the position more than the last few coaching staffs and in 2013 I’m cautiously optimistic about the position.

Let’s take a closer look at the Bills’ tight ends and fullbacks and how they could perform in 2013.

How Scott Chandler’s Progress Affects the Bills’ Tight End Depth Chart

With the recent report that tight end Scott Chandler was recovering quicker than expected from offseason ACL surgery, the team’s tight end situation got a little more confusing.

Already an average position in terms of talent before Chandler went down in week 15, the Bills entered the offseason with many questions to answer. They added one tight end in the draft and signed another off waivers, but nobody had yet risen to the top of the heap in the young offseason. With Chandler potentially back for Week 1, he may be able to walk right back into the starting job. However, there are some other names fighting for playing time and a roster spot to keep an eye on.

Let’s take a closer look at the current competitors, ranked from most likely to least likely to make the Bills’ final 53-man roster.

With the conclusion of this weekend’s rookie and first year player minicamp it now turns into a massive waiting game as any of the 20 plus try-out players wait to see if they impressed enough to get a call and a contract. That wait for one try-out player didn’t take very long as 2010 draftee Dorin Dickerson has been signed by the Bills per his own Twitter account. (more…)
