While Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools account for most selections and nearly all the top picks in each year’s NFL draft, small schools should not be overlooked.

Non-FBS schools have averaged 24.6 selections during the past five drafts, with nearly 70 percent of those selections coming from from the Football Championship Subdivision (previously known as Division I-AA).

While non-FBS schools have not had a first-round pick since the Arizona Cardinals selected Tennessee State cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with the No. 16 overall pick in 2008, there has been at least one small-school prospect has been selected in the second round of the draft each year since 2005.

Almost all small-school prospects face the scrutiny of the level of competition that they played against, but every year small school athletes emerge and contribute in the NFL.

In this article, we’ll explore some small school prospects to watch leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft.

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

The top FCS prospect for 2013 is Elon WR Aaron Mellette, but how many of his teammates made our watchlist? (Photo: US Presswire)

By Matthew Elder

One of my favorite things in the world to do is to watch small school football, and by small school football I mean FCS, Division II, Division III, and the NAIA. There is something about it that has a different kind of purity to it for me. As more FCS teams get on TV weekly and are available online their prospects become more apparent to both college football and NFL Draft fans alike.

Over the years following these players, talking about them, and scouting them has become a passion of mine and its one that many of you out there seem to enjoy. So this year I didn’t want to just release a ranking set or tell you a few players in one random game to watch. I wanted to create a database of sorts for you to reference and utilize throughout the entire college football season and into the 2013 NFL Draft. Not every player listed below will be a  NFL prospect, not every prospect will make it.

The names below are based on players I have seen, people I have spoken to who I trust, and some names that honestly intrigue me. So before I babble on for a lot longer, let me just give you the list. Here are 575 players to watch in the FCS, please enjoy, share, and utilize. (more…)
