Waiver Wire Pickups

Derek Carr, QB, Oakland Raiders (Owned in 4% of Yahoo! Leagues): The young gunslinger is perhaps the only glimmer of hope for Oakland Raiders fans. After throwing four touchdowns against a very tough San Diego defense, he is one of the better options as a No. 2 quarterback for the coming bye weeks. He is building a connection with his bevy of wide receivers and has the chance to put up top-15 numbers every week from here on in.

Carson Palmer, QB, Arizona Cardinals (30% Y!): After sitting out for more than a month with a nerve injury in his throwing shoulder, Palmer returned Sunday against the Washington Redskins and revitalized the Arizona Cardinals’ passing game by throwing for 250 yards. Arizona loves to throw the ball, and Palmer has good amount of weapons. Pick him up as a streamer quarterback option for bye weeks.

Waiver Wire Pickups

Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants (Owned in 47% of Yahoo! leagues): A 300-yard, four-touchdown game is not something we will see every week out of Manning, especially since he did this against a weak Washington Redskins defense in Week 4, but it is major improvement over what he had done the first three weeks of the season. It took Manning some time to adjust to the new West Coast offense but now that he seems to be making major strides with it, he is definitely worth a look as a QB flier for those going into more bye week trouble moving forward.

Seven Takeaways from Buffalo Bills’ Pre-Draft Visits

Sunday, April 27th, 2014

Since the beginning of April, the Buffalo Bills have hosted 29 potential selections in this year’s NFL draft on official visits with the team. It appears as though the team is not using its 30th allotted visit, as Sunday was the NFL’s deadline for pre-draft visitors.

As the team had a finite limit of how many players it could bring to One Bills Drive, the visits list gives a telling indication of what the Bills could be looking for in this year’s draft.

It gives us a better indication of which positions the Bills are looking to draft than it does which players they will actually select. While Buffalo only drafted two of its pre-draft visitors last year—Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel and Clemson safety Jonathan Meeks—its six picks in the first five rounds all came from positions at which the team hosted at least five prospects (quarterbacks, wide receiver, linebacker, safety).

With that in mind, we can get a good idea of what positions Buffalo is looking to upgrade in this year’s draft, what type of players they are looking for at those positions, and more.

2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Running Backs

Saturday, April 26th, 2014

Considering the way the NFL has become a passing league, running back is not the highly valued position that it once was. With many successful starting running backs having been selected later in the draft in recent years, many teams are no longer valuing running backs as early-round selection.

First round running backs may be a thing of the past and there is no running back in this class with enough value to warrant a first round selection. That said, there are plenty of players who have the skills needed to be starters or at least be a solid complimentary runner.

As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2014 NFL Draft, they are allowed to bring up to 30 players to One Bills Drive for on-site pre-draft visits. Though it’s dangerous to read too much into those visits for projections, they can be a good indicator into not only what prospects the Bills want to get to know better, but also what schools, positions or types of players the team might be keeping a close eye on.

The Bills hosted one player, Alabama offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio, for a pre-draft visit Friday. Kouandjio, who could be among the team’s strongest second-round options if he is available at the No. 41 overall pick, is the 29th player to visit the Bills, leaving them with just one official visit. During the team’s pre-draft luncheon Friday, general manager Doug Whaley said the team “probably won’t have anybody else” in for a visit, as the league’s deadline to host official visits is Sunday.
