Making the Grade: Which Buffalo Bills Have Rumbled and Stumbled in the First Half of the 2013 Season?

The Buffalo Bills have reached the midpoint of their season and have a 3-5 record. The record itself is somewhat deceiving of their season to date, as the Bills have given every team they have played a competitive game.

Part of the credit for Buffalo’s competitiveness belongs to the team’s coaching staff, especially defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. The Bills defense has kept the team in many games thanks to the pressure Pettine has dialed up, which has led to sacks and turnovers.

On the other side of the story, Buffalo is starting to close the gap on other teams when it comes to talent. The Bills have added talented players to their roster via the draft and free agency in the past two seasons, while they still have some returning veteran talent including defensive tackle Kyle Williams and running back Fred Jackson, who are the hearts and souls of the defense and offense, respectively. For the first time in years, the Bills seem to have many talented players on both sides of the ball.

Four of the best and four of the worst players on the Bills through the first half of the season are detailed below, as determined in part by each player’s cumulative grades for the season from Pro Football Focus (a subscription is required to access their grades database). Grades are based upon a scale where zero is considered to be average, and players earn positive or negative points based upon their success in completing their assignments or impacting the play on individual plays.

Making the Grade: Which Bills Players Rumbled and Stumbled vs. the Dolphins in Week 7?

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013

I’ll never be out when it comes to the Buffalo Bills, but things were looking bleak for the 2013 season going into Week 7. The Bills sat at 2-4 and had three teams with winning records — the Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs — on the horizon. Buffalo needed to find a way to beat the Dolphins, who came into the game with a 3-2 record.

It wasn’t pretty, but as Dan Hope pointed out, the defense led the Bills to a 23-21 victory. Due to the team’s defensive performance, this week’s Making the Grade focuses on Buffalo’s defense, as there were few bright spots on the Bills offense.

All grades are courtesy of Pro Football Focus (subscription required). In case you need a refresher, a PFF grade of 0.0 is an average grade.

First Downs and Flags: Buffalo Bills 2-2 At the Quarter Pole

The jury is still out on who exactly the 2013 Buffalo Bills are. In a long, drawn-out affair that saw several trips to the replay booth, the Buffalo Bills triumphed over the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, 23-20, on Sunday.

While I felt Buffalo was slowly letting the game slip away at several times throughout the second half, second-round pick middle linebacker Kiko Alonso stepped up once again and demonstrated that he is a big time playmaker.

A crippled defensive secondary forced Super Bowl MVP quarterback Joe Flacco to throw five interceptions. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine dialed up pressure, and the offense did enough early to help Buffalo squeak out an important victory.

The Bills sit at 2-2 at the quarter pole of the season, and with games already versus the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens, I feel most fans should feel happy with the team’s results thus far.

The defense demonstrated Sunday why they will receive many of the first down accolades in this week’s “First Downs and Flags.”

Unless the Bills plan to cut any more players or add any to reserve lists, they are down to their final roster opening as of late Monday afternoon. The Bills announced the signing of veteran safety Jim Leonhard on Monday, along with additions to fill the final three spots on their practice squad.
