The need to be able to stop the run out of nickel and dime defensive packages to match up with spread offensive formations has put the safety position in high demand. Having a safety who can come up and play near the line of scrimmage, but also has the range and instincts to play in single-high looks, goes a long way in being able to field an aggressive defensive scheme.

Two prospects in the 2014 NFL draft in particular offer the ability to perform well in both area, and they received first-round grades as a result.

After Aaron Williams signed a four-year contract extension Wednesday, every arrow is pointing in the direction of Jairus Byrd not being retained by the Buffalo Bills. With one safety locked up through 2018, the focus shifts to who will fill the shoes of the three-time Pro Bowler, who the team decided to leave untagged earlier this week.

Though some might be projected to be selected much higher than others, every player who has participated in this week’s Senior Bowl has a legitimate chance to be selected in the 2014 NFL Draft.

For a prospect to convince an NFL team that he is worth drafting, the process starts with on-field performance, including this week’s practice sessions and Saturday’s game for the top seniors in Mobile, Ala. this week. Though there is still one remaining day of practice and a game to be played Saturday, most NFL scouts, coaches and executives who attended the 2014 Senior Bowl left Mobile, Ala. after Wednesday, the final day of fully-padded practices of both the North and South teams.

After three days in Mobile, Wednesday night was also time for me to return home, but not without a notebook full of chicken-scratch and observations that left me feeling confident in evaluations of some players and with more questions than ever on others.

The 2014 Senior Bowl week is well underway as NFL scouts, executives and coaches filled the South Exhibit Hall at the Mobile Convention Center on Monday morning for this year’s weigh-ins. 110 draft hopefuls walked across the stage to have their bodies examined and heights and weights announced in front of the crowd, while hand width, arm length and wingspans were also distributed.
