The Buffalo Bills ended some long, unwanted droughts at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. With a 17-9 win over the New England Patriots, the Bills secured their first winning season since 2004, finishing the year at 9-7, while they also won for the first time on the road in Foxborough, Mass. since 2000, despite playing one game against the Patriots there every year since.

Even so, the Bills and their fans won’t be telling their kids about the time they beat the Patriots in New England in 2014. The outcome of Sunday’s game had no impact on the streak the Bills really wanted to end in 2014—Buffalo’s season is over prior to the playoffs again for a 15th consecutive year—and it came on a day that the Patriots played like they had nothing to play for, having already clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC before Week 17 even began.

Much to the chagrin of Buffalo Bills fans and the delight of New England Patriots fans, Sunday’s regular-season finale between the two teams is essentially meaningless. The Bills, at 8-7, have been eliminated from the playoffs for a 15th consecutive year; the Patriots, at 12-3, have already clinched the AFC’s No. 1 postseason seed.

Still, there will be pride on the line in Sunday’s game, especially for the Buffalo Bills, who haven’t beat the New England Patriots in Gillette Stadium since 2000 and have lost 26 of their 28 games against the Patriots since. Additionally, a victory Sunday could secure the Bills’ first winning record since 2004, another year they went 9-7.

With that in mind, there’s still reason for Bills fans to watch Sunday’s season finale, and there’s still reason for the Bills to play as hard as they can to secure a win—but it’s also undeniable that everyone involved with the Bills should have one eye toward the offseason at this point. As much as the Bills will play for a W on Sunday, it will also be a final chance for both players and coaches to prove their worth to the Bills and/or to the league as a whole heading into 2015.

Here’s some of the dynamics that will be worth keeping an eye on Sunday.

2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Quarterbacks

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

With a plethora of differing evaluations on the top quarterback prospects, there could be as many as four or as few as zero quarterbacks selected among the top 10 picks of the 2014 NFL draft.

Teddy Bridgewater ranks as the No. 1 quarterback and prospect in this year’s draft class, and the second-best quarterback draft prospect (behind Andrew Luck) since 2001. He is NFL-ready and has the intelligence and skill set needed to be a franchise signal-caller. A team needing a quarterback should not pass on his talent, which is why I feel the Houston Texans should select him with the first pick in this year’s draft.

2014 Senior Bowl: Saturday Standouts and Disappointments

Though the 2014 NFL Draft is still more than three months away, Saturday’s Senior Bowl was the last opportunity to watch any top prospects take the field in a fully-padded, 60-minute football game.

The game itself was only one part of the evaluation process that took place this week in Mobile, Ala., and the Senior Bowl itself is just a small part of each participating player’s evaluation. Still, the game gave each prospect playing in it a chance to stand out.

A strong performance Saturday meant little to any prospect who didn’t show the same ability in actual college football games and in Senior Bowl practices earlier this week. A few players, however, further proved their ability from strong collegiate careers and standout practices by making big plays on gameday.

2014 Senior Bowl Ask the Players: Why Should an NFL Team Draft You?

Though some might be projected to be selected much higher than others, every player who has participated in this week’s Senior Bowl has a legitimate chance to be selected in the 2014 NFL Draft.

For a prospect to convince an NFL team that he is worth drafting, the process starts with on-field performance, including this week’s practice sessions and Saturday’s game for the top seniors in Mobile, Ala. this week. That process extends to the interview room, however, where players have an opportunity to persuade teams that they have not only the on-field skills, but also the character and intelligence, professional football teams expect.

While I had the opportunity to watch all of the Senior Bowl participants during practices at Ladd-Peebles Stadium and Fairhope Municipal Stadium this week, I also interviewed more than 20 prospects to get a closer look at each of them beyond their tape and the skills they displayed in practices.

“If I were representing an NFL team, what would you say to convince me ‘This is why you should draft (player name)?’”
