Through the first 36 minutes of their Week 13 game against the Cleveland Browns, it looked as though the Buffalo Bills might be in for another game like their Week 11 loss to the Miami Dolphins, a game in which they failed to score a touchdown.

Everything changed after a 4th-and-2 gamble, at the 8:36 mark of the third quarter, paid off with a 35-yard deep catch by Bills wide receiver Robert Woods, caught from quarterback Kyle Orton even through the defensive pass interference of Browns cornerback Buster Skrine.

On its next play, Buffalo scored a three-yard touchdown on a pass from Orton to Bills wide receiver Chris Hogan.

On the first play of the Browns’ subsequent offensive possession, Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes beat Browns left tackle Joe Thomas—despite a hold from Thomas—to catch Browns running back Terrance West in pursuit, force a fumble, recover the ball himself and return it 18 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bills 14 points in only 14 seconds.

That spurt gave the Bills a 14-3 lead from which they never looked back, as they ultimately won the game 26-10.

Two franchises that have been known more for losing than winning since the turn of the century, the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns will be fighting to keep themselves in the race for a playoff position when they play each other Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

For the 6-5 Bills, who return home to Ralph Wilson Stadium after playing their last home game in Detroit due to snow in Western New York, this game is one they must win to keep even slim hopes of ending their playoff drought alive before they enter a brutally tough final quadrant of the season. The Browns are in better position than the Bills, as they are currently 7-4 and in a five-way tie for a wild card spot, but they also need victory as they hold no tiebreakers over any other teams in the wild card race.

Both teams have reason to be confident heading into this game, as each was victorious in its last outing, but football is a game of matchups. The following matchups and keys to the game will be deciding factors in how this game—a game more important at this juncture of the season than most for either in recent years—plays out.

Time to Build Momentum: Previewing Buffalo Bills vs. Cleveland Browns

The Buffalo Bills shocked much of the football world last week by controlling a game against the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens for a 23-20 victory. Although the Bills didn’t put away the game when they had chances to extend the lead in the fourth quarter, the young team held strong and achieved a win that will do wonders for the morale of an injury-laden squad.

The real test for how close the Bills are to becoming a contending team is to see if they can capitalize and seize some potential momentum Thursday versus the 2-2 Cleveland Browns. Although the Browns are 2-0 since trading Trent Richardson, they lack the type of offensive weapons to take over a game; they make their success on defense. In what is likely to be a close, potentially ugly football game, the Bills’ ability to keep their heads, avoid dumb penalties and force mistakes might be the difference between a winning record and going back to a losing one.
