With talent at the top of the class and a lack of overall depth, this is not the year to wait for a tight end if you are a team in the market. Securing a reliable receiving threat at the tight end position is a vital move for teams with a young quarterback, and this class offers some intriguing options.

Brigham Young (8-5) and Washington (9-4) faced off in the Fight Hunger Bowl on Friday, Dec. 27, with both teams looking to get their ninth win of the season.

Despite being overwhelmingly outgained on offense, Washington led 21-16 at halftime behind a couple of touchdowns by junior running back Bishop Sankey, who declared for the 2014 NFL draft Monday, and won the game by a final score of 31-16.

Several seniors from both teams, as well as a number of Washington underclassmen including Sankey, are expected to be selections in the 2014 NFL draft.

The final game of the bowl season’s first week will feature numerous NFL prospects on both sides of the ball for both teams as the BYU Cougars (8-4) and Washington Huskies (8-4) play in Friday night’s Fight Hunger Bowl (9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

While both of these teams will be looking to finish their season with a ninth victory, the game’s senior NFL prospects, including BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy and Washington quarterback Keith Price, will be looking to make a big impression in their final college football games before moving on to the next level. The same might be the case for a few select underclassmen, including Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins and running back Bishop Sankey, who could declare for the 2014 NFL draft to take advantage of early-round potential.

The Mountain West Conference has been a consistent producer of NFL talent the past few drafts. An average of 11.2 players have been selected from the conference during the last five drafts, including three first-round picks (Boise State defensive end Shea McClellin and running back Doug Martin in 2012, TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes in 2010).

Independent teams haven’t produced the amount of picks that the MWC has, but thanks to Notre Dame, they have had more top talent. There have been an average of 3.6 players selected from independent FBS programs during the last five drafts, including four first-round picks (BYU defensive end Ezekiel Ansah and Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert in 2013, Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd and safety Harrison Smith in 2012).

Notre Dame defensive linemen Louis Nix III and Stephen Tuitt and Brigham Young’s linebacker Kyle Van Noy give the independent teams a number of potential first-round picks again in the 2014 NFL draft. The MWC boasts quarterback prospects David Fales (San Jose State) and Derek Carr (Fresno State) and an intriguing, athletic defensive lineman in Boise State’s Demarcus Lawrence.

In this article, we’ll explore some other players to keep an eye out for amongst the Independent and Mountain West teams.
