The Buffalo Bills defense is currently in a state of flux as defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has left to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and subsequently, has pilfered three Bills assistant coaches from last year’s staff, one who had been hired by the Bills earlier this month (Jeff Hafley) and might be on the verge of hiring away defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

The Bills reacted quickly and hired former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz to replace Pettine. Though his staff isn’t completely solidified yet, it appears likely that Schwartz will bring his “Wide 9,” 4-3 based defense to Buffalo.

The good news for Schwartz is that he’s entering a kitchen with a well-stocked pantry. Buffalo’s defense was its stronger side of the ball last season, and with only one glaring exception, returns all of its key contributors who, for the most part, look to be solid fits for Schwartz’ scheme.

BBD Editor: Dan Hope

Doug Marrone has kept all of his coordinators in tact going into his second season as head coach, but he has already made two changes to his coaching staff. One of those changes came Monday, when the Bills announced linebackers coach Chuck Driesbach was relieved of his duties.

The 2013 season was Driesbach’s 37th year as a football coach, but his first with the Bills and in the National Football League altogether.

The Associated Press’ NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting is projected to be a tight race between two AFC East impact players, Buffalo Bills middle linebacker Kiko Alonso and New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson.

The ballots have already been cast, but the winner will not be revealed until this year’s NFL Honors on Feb. 1. Who deserves to win this year’s award? Below, staff writer Ryan Glaze argues Alonso’s case to be the first Buffalo Bill to win the award since Shane Conlan in 1987, while editor Dan Hope explains why his vote would go to Richardson.

BBD Assistant Editor: Ryan Talbot

Going into the season, BBD editors Dan Hope and Ryan Talbot ranked the Buffalo Bills’ training camp roster from top to bottom, and at the midseason mark, they went back over the 53-man roster at the time to evaluate the first half of the season. With the 2013 Bills season now completely in the books, it was time to take one more look at the 2013 roster and determine which players were the most, or least, productive this year.

The 53 players ranked are based on the team’s final roster with the exception of wide receiver Cordell Roberson, who was signed prior to the team’s last game to replace strong safety Aaron Williams, who was placed on injured reserve for the final game only. These rankings were intended to evaluate the players only on their performance in the 2013 season, and not to predict which players will be back with the Bills or make the biggest impact on the team in 2014.

After an embarrassing loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-9) last week, all pre-bye momentum for the Buffalo Bills (4-9) has flown out the proverbial window. In fact, they now find themselves closer to playing for the No. 1 overall pick than for the playoffs. As frustrated as Bills fans and players might be, it’s another winter of playing for the future in Buffalo, which needs to start in earnest Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-9).
