The Buffalo Bills’ 2014 training camp is officially set to begin. On Sunday, the Bills will have their first practice of the summer at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, N.Y. After a busy offseason in which the Bills rebuilt much of their coaching staff once again, signed free agents and made a splashy trade in the draft, training camp will be a time for Buffalo to answer lingering questions about its 2014 team and prepare for the upcoming season.

Kiko Alonso had a brilliant rookie season. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as the Buffalo Bills linebacker was named Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America. However, the Bills won’t be getting an encore performance in 2014. Alonso tore his left ACL earlier this week while working out in Oregon, and he is likely out for the season.

On the field for every Buffalo Bills defensive play in 2013, Kiko Alonso won’t see a single snap in 2014.

Bills general manager Doug Whaley announced Tuesday night that linebacker Kiko Alonso, the Pro Football Writers of America’s choice for Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, suffered a knee injury while working out in Oregon.

“We do not have the details at this point, but early indications are that it might be significant,” Whaley said of Alonso’s knee injury in his statement.

Both ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport have reported that Alonso has a torn ACL. Should that be the official diagnosis, Alonso will almost certainly be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Literally an every-down player as Buffalo’s middle linebacker in 2013, Alonso was set to move to weakside linebacker this season as the Bills move to a 4-3 based defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. What almost certainly wasn’t going to change, however, was Alonso’s status as the star and leader of the Bills’ linebacker group.

The Buffalo Bills defense is currently in a state of flux as defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has left to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and subsequently, has pilfered three Bills assistant coaches from last year’s staff, one who had been hired by the Bills earlier this month (Jeff Hafley) and might be on the verge of hiring away defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

The Bills reacted quickly and hired former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz to replace Pettine. Though his staff isn’t completely solidified yet, it appears likely that Schwartz will bring his “Wide 9,” 4-3 based defense to Buffalo.

The good news for Schwartz is that he’s entering a kitchen with a well-stocked pantry. Buffalo’s defense was its stronger side of the ball last season, and with only one glaring exception, returns all of its key contributors who, for the most part, look to be solid fits for Schwartz’ scheme.
