The Buffalo Bills’ process of reducing their roster to the 53-man regular season limit is well underway. The Bills released 10 players Friday, including punter Brian Moorman and defensive tackle Landon Cohen, and also added three to injured reserve, to bring their roster down to 62 men.

If you missed Thursday’s Buffalo Bills preseason finale because of the local blackout in Western New York, you didn’t miss much. The Bills fans who watched it might already be trying to erase the game from their memory.

The Bills lost, 23-0, against the Detroit Lions to finish their preseason with a 1-4 record.

Thursday’s score will not matter as the regular season begins next week. Neither will any team’s preseason record. That said, the Bills will need to play drastically better, especially on offense, to have any chance of emerging as a contender and avoid giving the Cleveland Browns a very high selection with the first-round pick they traded to Cleveland in the Sammy Watkins deal this year.

The Buffalo Bills have released defensive tackle Alan Branch.

Branch was arrested Saturday morning and charged with a DWI after police saw him vomiting out of the driver side door of his car. He failed a sobriety test and had a blood-alcohol content of .14. Branch was inactive from yesterday’s game against the Buccaneers and wasn’t on the sidelines during the game.

Branch had signed a three-year extension on December 23rd to remain with the Bills. He was a strong fit in Mike Pettine’s defense, but didn’t fit as well into Jim Schwartz’s defense.

This season, Branch didn’t endear himself to his new defensive coaches. Branch did not report to voluntary OTAs. At the time, Doug Marrone said he had not heard from Branch or Manny Lawson, another veteran who did not report.

I haven’t talked to them. It’s voluntary. We all know that,” coach Doug Marrone said. “I tend to not worry about the things that I can’t control, and obviously I can’t control that.

When Branch reported to training camp, he was placed on the non-football illness list after failing his conditioning test. With Branch off the field, players such as Corbin Bryant, Stefan Charles and Landon Cohen gained valuable reps. In the preseason, all three performed well and Branch was pushed further and further down the depth chart.

In the team’s third preseason game against the Steelers, Branch didn’t enter the game until late in the second half. Speculation began that Branch was at risk of being released. His DWI was most certainly the final nail in the coffin.

The Buffalo Bills fell to 1-2 in the preseason after dropping Saturday night’s contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 19-16. A lack of sound situational football, particularly on offense, kept the Bills from winning despite some positive play from their defense. The Bills only punted twice in 13 offensive series, while they controlled the ball for more than 35 minutes and ran 35 more plays on offense, but they only scored one touchdown.

The biggest positive of the game for the Bills came in escaping with no major injuries, including No. 4 overall pick Sammy Watkins, who left the game in the first quarter with a rib injury but was reported to be “fine” by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The Buffalo Bills went into Friday night’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers with one distinct advantage: while the contest was the first game action of the year for the Panthers, the Bills had already strapped on the pads Sunday night for the Hall of Fame Game against the New York Giants. The Bills parlayed that advantage into a 20-18 victory.

The team can some pride in its win, but it shouldn’t take any time to celebrate. Preseason victories, though better than losses, are essentially meaningless. There are still many things the Bills need to be doing better to consistently win games in the regular season. However, there were some promising areas of progress in Friday’s game, especially in the play of quarterback EJ Manuel and the Bills offense.
