The common refrain for the Buffalo Bills in recent losing efforts has often been that while their defense made the plays they needed to make, their offense let them down.

The opposite was true on Sunday, at least in the second half, as the New England Patriots scored 24 points in the final 30 minutes to win, 37-22, and take a one-game lead over the Bills in the AFC East.

The Buffalo Bills were one of just seven NFL teams to open their season with back-to-back wins, but they were sent back down to earth on Sunday as they suffered a 22-10 loss to the San Diego Chargers at Ralph Wilson Stadium, bringing both teams to 2-1 records for the year.

There were some aspects of Sunday’s game that went fine for the Bills.

Buffalo’s offense finished the game without a single turnover.

Its defense was able to limit the Chargers to field goals on two of their four trips into the red zone. The rushing defense also had a strong performance, as it limited the Chargers to just 85 yards on 37 carries.

The Buffalo special teams continued to execute well: Dan Carpenter made his only field goal attempt of the day, Colton Schmidt averaged 45.2 yards per punt, no punts were returned for positive yardage and all three of Jordan Gay’s kickoffs were touchbacks.

Overall, however, the Chargers were simply the better team on the field Sunday. San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers and his offense executed efficiently throughout the game, whereas Buffalo quarterback EJ Manuel and his offense never found any consistent rhythm. The Chargers appear to be one of the NFL’s better teams this year, but the Bills need to improve in a number of areas in order to score wins against playoff-caliber teams this season.

The Buffalo Bills weren’t able to come out on top in regulation, but they were able to pull together a win in overtime against the Chicago Bears, on the road, in their 2014 regular season opener.

Buffalo won the turnover battle, three to one, and had overall solid performances from all three of its units: offense, defense and special teams.

What did Buffalo do well to start its season with a one in the W column, and what must it do better to continue winning games and do so without needing overtime? Feel free to chime in and let us know what you think was positive or negative about the Bills’ season opener, but here’s a look at eight things we saw on the field Sunday.
