The Buffalo Bills officially lost one of their starters for the rest of the season when they placed cornerback Leodis McKelvin, who fractured his ankle against the Miami Dolphins, on injured reserve Monday.

McKelvin, a seventh-year cornerback who has spent entire career in Buffalo, played in each of the Bills’ first 10 games this season and started nine of them. He had 48 total tackles and held the team lead with four interceptions.

Already holding a seven-point lead at home after the first half, the Buffalo Bills seemed on the verge of taking command of Sunday’s game as running back Bryce Brown barreled toward the end zone on a run from the 12-yard line. As Brown crossed the goal line, the Bills would have taken a 17-3 lead before kicking the ball back to the Kansas City Chiefs … except that Brown didn’t have the ball with him when he broke the plane.

As Brown reached the 5-yard line, he was stripped of the ball by Ron Parker, a defensive back who came up big time and time again for the Chiefs on Sunday. The ball rolled through the end zone as Bills tight end Scott Chandler missed an opportunity to recover it, and seven points were officially squandered as the Chiefs got the ball on a touchback.

Brown’s fumble proved to be the turning point in a game that the Chiefs ultimately won 17-13.

The Buffalo Bills are right in the thick of the AFC playoff race, currently sitting in a four-way tie for sixth place with a record of 5-3. The defense has really carried the team while the offense has been opportunistic enough to contribute to the winning record.

Overall through eight games, many defensive players have graded out very well while the offensive players have been more boom or bust in terms of individual performances.

After seeing on ESPN Gametracker that the Buffalo Bills had turned the ball over three times in the first half against the Minnesota Vikings—only seeing live the Bills’ fourth turnover when Kyle Orton fumbled on a strip sack—I headed back to my apartment just north of Boston with the radio turned off, hoping as a fan of the Bills that they would somehow mount a miraculous comeback. I snuck a peek at my phone at a rest stop on the Mass Pike and saw the game update “FINAL: MIN 16 – BUF 17.”

It’s almost hard to believe that there were reasons for Bills fans to be happy or even quasi-happy about the outcome of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. While the Bills ended up victorious when Sammy Watkins caught a game-winning touchdown from Kyle Orton with just a tick left on the clock to give Buffalo a 17-16 win, questions remain about the team’s ability to contend for the playoffs this season.

How are the Bills supposed to feel after a game like that? What are the expectations for the final nine games? Have they changed?

The common refrain for the Buffalo Bills in recent losing efforts has often been that while their defense made the plays they needed to make, their offense let them down.

The opposite was true on Sunday, at least in the second half, as the New England Patriots scored 24 points in the final 30 minutes to win, 37-22, and take a one-game lead over the Bills in the AFC East.
