An exciting weekend in Canton for the Buffalo Bills, highlighted by Andre Reed’s enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has come to an end.

Sunday night’s Hall of Fame Game wasn’t quite as enthusing for the Bills, who lost 17-13 to the New York Giants, but the first preseason game should always come with its ups and downs. The good news for the Bills is that the loss, even though they tried to win, won’t matter at all when the regular-season games begin.

It’s important to remember that just one game into the preseason—there’s still four more exhibition games to go but the games that matter begin—it’s still way too early to jump to conclusions about any players. Young, inexperienced players are expected to have some hiccups early in the preseason.

With that being said, there were members of the Bills whose performances from Sunday night deserve praise, while there were others who need to be better to make positive contributions his fall.

A lot has changed for the Buffalo Bills as they head into their final preseason showdown versus the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.

In the course of one week, the Bills have seen the return of arguably their best defender (free safety Jairus Byrd), lost their best cornerback (Stephon Gilmore) to injury, released a once-heralded potential sleeper (wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers) and with quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb both injured, could become the first team to start an undrafted rookie quarterback in their season opener in the common draft era.

Amidst all of those changes, the team still has some tough decisions to make in regards to who will make their regular-season roster. With starting jobs still on the line, valuable reserve spots up for grabs and injuries suddenly opening new opportunities, the final preseason game is truly important for many players on the roster.

Sunday night marked the long-awaited return of the AMC television hit Breaking Bad. While the world awaits the fate of Walter White, Buffalo Bills fans received a brief glimpse into their possible 2013 fate on Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis.

A film review of Sunday’s game has given Buffalo their own version of players who decided, in their season debut with the Bills, to “break bad.” In an effort to remain positive, we will also look at some players who broke bad habits and had a positive debut on Sunday.

Our first installment of “5 Up, 5 Down” for the Bills’ 2013 preseason looks at players who helped or hurt their case to make the Buffalo Bills roster and/or earn greater playing time, although I tried to keep my focus on rookies and players on the bubble to make the team.

Final scores are meaningless in the preseason, but Buffalo Bills fans are wishing that wasn’t the case after the team’s 44-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, an AFC playoff team last season, in their preseason opener Sunday.

There was a lot to like about the Bills’ preseason opener Sunday. Rookie quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel combined to complete 35 of 44 passing attempts for 315 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. In addition to their three passing touchdowns, the Bills also scored touchdowns on defense (interception return by Jumal Rolle) and special teams (kickoff return by Marquise Goodwin).

Manuel, Tuel, Rolle and Goodwin were all among the standouts on Sunday’s first slice of game action for the Buffalo Bills’ 2013 season. Let’s go in-depth and take a closer look at what worked — and a little bit of what didn’t — in the Bills’ impressive preseason outing today.

The Buffalo Bills head into their preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts with more at stake than most would expect for an early August scrimmage.

With a new coaching staff and organizational philosophy intact, there are many players who are looking to prove that they belong on the new-look Bills. The first game will be an opportunity for some players brought in by the new regime to warm themselves to the Buffalo faithful, while many returning players will need to prove that they can change with the times and fit into the new schemes.

With the starters set to only play a few possessions, Bills fans will need to turn their eyes to the reserves in order to find the most intriguing story lines. For the following players, the pressure on Sunday might be the most palpable.
