2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Running Backs

Considering the way the NFL has become a passing league, running back is not the highly valued position that it once was. With many successful starting running backs having been selected later in the draft in recent years, many teams are no longer valuing running backs as early-round selection.

First round running backs may be a thing of the past and there is no running back in this class with enough value to warrant a first round selection. That said, there are plenty of players who have the skills needed to be starters or at least be a solid complimentary runner.

With version 1.0 of my Buffalo Bills mock draft being more than one month old, it’s time for another look at how Buffalo’s draft could stack up. It’s early February, so it’s safe to say there’s still plenty of uncertainty when it comes to the 2014 NFL draft. In general, teams will have a better ideas of how their draft boards stack up after some of their roster holes get filled via free agency.

For the sake of this mock draft, I’ll make a few free agency predictions. First, I think the Bills will resign Jairus Byrd long-term or replace him with a fellow free agent (T.J. Ward and Chris Clemons are two solid options that come to mind). Buffalo could also add a left guard in free agency along with a veteran defensive lineman.

If they can address those needs with veteran signings, here’s one way they could continue building their roster with their seven picks in this year’s draft.

After a disappointing 38-14 loss to Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship Game that cost them a trip to the Rose Bowl, Arizona State (10-3) will be looking to rebound with a victory over Texas Tech (7-5) in the Holiday Bowl (Monday, 10:15 p.m. ET, ESPN).

The Arizona State defense will be challenged by the nation’s second-ranked passing offense, which features standout tight end Jace Amaro. Several Sun Devils defenders with an NFL future will be relied upon to slow down the Red Raiders’ prolific spread aerial attack.

Joe Marino’s Senior Running Back Rankings for the 2014 NFL Draft

The running back position has decreased in draft value over the past few seasons. NFL teams have been able to find backs later in the draft who prove to be viable starters.

That’s exactly what I see in many of the senior running backs in the 2014 class. Some of them are situational-type players, but most of them are prospects that could fill the role of a starter who gets selected in the later rounds of the draft and proves to be a tremendous value pick.
