After a six-win season in 2013, the Buffalo Bills’ brain trust of general manager Doug Whaley, head coach Doug Marrone and team president Russ Brandon will look to lead the team to improvement in 2014. A major part of that process will play out this offseason as the Bills look to add talent to their roster through the NFL draft, free agency and possibly trades.

The Bills especially need to improve the talent of their offense, which ranked 19th in the NFL in total yards (338.1 per game) and 22nd in points scored (21.2 per game). Still, from quarterback EJ Manuel to left tackle Cordy Glenn and others in between, the Bills have some core pieces to continue building around this offseason.

Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone at least publicly stated Friday that he believed his team was still in the playoff hunt, but that became a serious long shot after Buffalo lost to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13. That led to the suggestion from some media members and Bills fans that the team should turn their focus away from making a playoff run, and toward developing its young talent as much as possible in preparation for 2014.

But regardless of what the Bills’ goal was Sunday, it wasn’t accomplished, unless that goal was to tank for better draft position.

Through the first eleven weeks of the season, the Buffalo Bills have made their fair share of big plays. Deciding on just five plays was a difficult task, but some of the “contenders” were eliminated from the list simply due to the fact they occurred in losing efforts.

The Buffalo Bills went into Sunday’s game against the New York Jets coming off their worst showing of the season in a Week 10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. After nothing had worked well against the Steelers for the Bills offense and quarterback EJ Manuel, all eyes were on the quarterback and the Bills offense as it was set to go against a strong New York Jets defense in the Bills’ first AFC East rematch of the season.

The Jets beat the Bills 27-20 in Week 3, but Sunday’s game went much differently, with the Bills blowing the Jets out for a 37-14 victory. Things did not look good for Manuel in the days leading up to the game as the Bills’ top two receivers, Robert Woods and Stevie Johnson, were ruled out with injuries. This left second-year T.J. Graham, rookie Marquise Goodwin, inexperienced Chris Hogan and underused Marcus Easley to serve as Buffalo’s receiving corps Sunday.

Even with those injuries and swirling gusts at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the Bills scored their highest point total of the season Sunday.

With EJ Manuel (sprained LCL) and Thad Lewis (bruised ribs) both out due to injury, Jeff Tuel made his first NFL start at quarterback with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. Many Bills fans were uneasy with Tuel, who completed just 8-of-20 passes for 80 yards in his only prior appearance of the season against the Cleveland Browns in Week 5, taking the helm against the Chiefs, who came into Week 9 as the NFL’s only undefeated team and with the league’s No. 1 scoring defense.

Tuel quickly gained the confidence of the crowd at Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium when he completed five of his first seven passes for 122 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marquise Goodwin. With the help of the Bills defense shutting down the Chiefs offense, the Bills went into the locker room at the half with a 10-3 lead. Tuel struggled in the second half, however. He finished the game having completed less than half of his passes (18-of-39) for 229 yards and one touchdown but two interceptions, while the Bills lost the game, 23-13, having been outscored 20-3 in the second half.
