Waiver Wire Pickups

Johnny Manziel, Cleveland Browns, QB (Owned in 22% of Yahoo! Leagues): For some reason, Johnny Football was not named the Cleveland Browns’ starter for Week 14, but another poor performance by Brian Hoyer led to a quarterback change for Week 15, when he will play the Cincinnati Bengals. The Browns’ first-round draft pick this past May, Manziel has an ability to run and throw proficiently, along with weapons such as Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron, that makes him a low-end QB1 with a very high ceiling who is worth owning in leagues with the space and/or need at the quarterback position.

Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders, QB (Y!: 7%): Another rookie quarterback, Derek Carr went up against a tough San Francisco 49ers defense and pulled out the upset victory while not throwing a single interception. He threw for three touchdowns and 254 yards in the effort, showing his vast improvement from the beginning of the season. Despite not having a good arsenal of weapons, Carr has made do with what has been given to him and made the most of it. He is building chemistry with tight end Mychal Rivera (see below) and also working with other targets like running back Marcel Reece. Carr has a very high ceiling and is a firm QB2 for this week despite another tough matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers, RB (Y!: 40%): Finally cut loose for a week from DeAngelo Williams, Stewart put up great numbers in an unexpected blowout of the New Orleans Saints. Running for 155 yards and a touchdown put him as one of the best performers at the running back position this past weekend. If Williams can’t suit up again with his finger injury, expect Stewart to be the bell-cow again and have the chance to put up a similar performance. He has a great matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and is a strong FLEX play this week at the worst. Go get him if you need any help at the RB position.

Waiver Wire Pickups

Drew Stanton, QB, Arizona Cardinals (Owned in 1% of Yahoo! Leagues): Carson Palmer is now out for the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee on Sunday. Welcome back Stanton, who was the starter for a few games at the beginning of the season while Palmer had a shoulder injury. Despite his shortcomings in talent, Stanton has a knowledge of the system and has plenty of weapons around him. He could end up being a serviceable QB2 and plug-and-play starter at points during the rest of the season.

Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants (57% Y!): The Giants are playing bad football right now, but Eli continues to put up decent fantasy numbers (890 yards, six touchdowns and only one interception in the past three games combined) despite losing his #1 WR and #1 RB. Manning seems to be clicking with Odell Beckham Jr. and is reportedly getting running back Rashad Jennings back in Week 11, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, which would give him another target. He has the potential to be a top-15 quarterback weekly and could be someone that Carson Palmer owners look at to replace him.

Waiver-Wire Pickups

Mark Sanchez, QB, Philadelphia Eagles (Owned in 3% of Yahoo! Leagues): Yes folks, I’m being serious. Mark Sanchez is now taking over in Philly for Nick Foles. And because of their offense being high-powered and fast paced, Sanchez is a must-own for Foles owners and anyone else who needs quarterback help. He will throw interceptions (two INTs on Sunday), but he should garner high passing yards (202 yards against the Houston Texans) and touchdowns (two TDs on Sunday).

Carson Palmer, QB, Arizona Cardinals (61% Y!): Palmer has led the Cardinals to the best record in the NFL and has no shortage of talented pass-catchers. With Michael Floyd, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Ellington and others, Palmer is in good hands with the Arizona offense. With a strong arm and veteran experience to boot, Palmer keeps putting up great fantasy points (nine TDs to two INTs in four games) and should be owned by anyone who has a QB on bye this week and/or needs a QB.

2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Wide Receivers

With seven players graded in the first round and 11 in the first two rounds, this is one of the best wide receiver classes I have ever scouted. Quality prospects with exciting playmaking potential can be found in each round of the 2014 draft.

Sammy Watkins is the premier talent in the group. He has a bright NFL future ahead of him. His value rivals that of top-tier prospects like AJ Green and Julio Jones, who were both selected in the top six of the 2011 NFL draft.

36 receivers in this year’s class have draftable grades, making this the year for teams to add weapons to their offenses.

The wide receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks took center stage on Day 2 of the on-field portion of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday, with the receivers’ light shining the brightest of the trio of positions.

In one of the deepest wide receiver classes in recent memory, several top prospects solidified their draft status, second-tier players made a push up the board, and some late-round guys had excellent on-field showings.
