With Saturday’s deadline to cut down the roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players, the Buffalo Bills had a busy day Friday. The Bills released 18 players from their roster, while also placing three injured players on the season-ending injured reserve, in order to cut their roster down to 55 players (the roster was at the 75-player limit prior to the 21 moves, but free safety Jairus Byrd’s roster exemption expires Saturday).

The Bills have not made any stunning releases yet, but they have released a few names who both Ryan Talbot and I had on our final roster projections. Conversely, the Bills have a few players still remaining on their roster who neither Ryan nor I expected to make the team.

Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions: Preseason Week 4 Live Game Thread

FINAL THOUGHTS: Thank goodness the preseason is over! Buffalo fell to 2-2 on the preseason after losing to the Lions 35-13.

Buffalo’s game against the Lions was rough to watch with two new quarterbacks under center. Matt Leinart was given the chance to start but did not take advantage of the opportunity. Leinart finished the game 3/10 for 11 yards with two interceptions. Thad Lewis took over for Leinart a few minutes into the second quarter and started off slowly. However, by the end of the night Lewis was 7/16 for 132 yards passing with one touchdown. Lewis also added 51 yards on seven carries. When Buffalo trims its roster to 53 players, look for Lewis to be Buffalo’s fourth quarterback after E.J. Manuel, Jeff Tuel and Kevin Kolb.

The big theme of the evening for the Bills were injuries. Three wide receivers suffered injuries: Marquise Goodwin, Chris Hogan and Marcus Easley. Luckily, all three injuries were not serious. Goodwin was poked in the eye and did not return, but both Hogan and Easley returned to the game. Easley had the offensive play of the game with a 79-yard touchdown reception from Lewis.

Unfortunately, not all of Buffalo’s injuries were minor. Doug Legursky had to be carted off in the second half with a knee injury. While no word has been given on the severity, the injury did not look good and I’d expect Legursky to be out for some time.

Defensively, Buffalo’s cornerbacks were picked on early and often. T.J. Heath had the worst performance among all cornerbacks, but he was a long-shot to make the roster. Crezdon Butler was picked upon quite a bit in the first half, but he did improve in the second half.

On special teams, Dustin Hopkins made both of his field goal attempts and an extra point. Hopkins did not miss any kicks during the preseason. Cornerback Nickell Robey muffed his second punt of the preseason. Definitely not a good showing for someone fighting for a roster spot.

Perhaps the best news tonight came before the game when E.J. Manuel was seen tossing the ball on the field. When the Bills play the Patriots in Week 1 there’s a chance that the Bills’ first round pick will be under center.

Buffalo Bills Players With Most to Prove In Preseason Finale vs. Detroit Lions

A lot has changed for the Buffalo Bills as they head into their final preseason showdown versus the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.

In the course of one week, the Bills have seen the return of arguably their best defender (free safety Jairus Byrd), lost their best cornerback (Stephon Gilmore) to injury, released a once-heralded potential sleeper (wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers) and with quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb both injured, could become the first team to start an undrafted rookie quarterback in their season opener in the common draft era.

Amidst all of those changes, the team still has some tough decisions to make in regards to who will make their regular-season roster. With starting jobs still on the line, valuable reserve spots up for grabs and injuries suddenly opening new opportunities, the final preseason game is truly important for many players on the roster.

BBD Week in Review: 8/19 – 8/26 — A Busy Week for the Bills

As one responsible for covering Buffalo Bills news, the last two days alone have felt like a week. Between a bevy of roster moves and injuries, the Buffalo Bills have made no shortage of moves over the past two days, and not much of it has been positive.

The weekend/Monday got off to a start when the Bills lost their most preseason game to the Washington Redskins in a 30-7 rout Saturday. The injury bug also hit the Bills during the loss. Potential starting quarterback Kevin Kolb, who suffered a concussion that is, according to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News, potentially career-ending. The Bills’ top cornerback, Stephon Gilmore fractured his wrist and is out for 6-8 weeks.

The Bills also lost another starter, right tackle Chris Hairston, for the entire season when they placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list Monday.

In response to Kolb’s injury, the Bills added two veteran quarterbacks to the roster by signing veteran free agent Matt Leinart and acquiring Thaddeus Lewis in a trade with the Detroit Lions in exchange for inside linebacker Chris White.

The Bills also had to make cuts to get their roster down to Tuesday’s 75-man limit. The Bills released five players Monday, most notably wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers.

Here at Buffalo Bills Draft, we brought you full coverage of all of the roster moves and injuries and how they affect the Bills, while we also looked back at the team’s disappointing preseason loss and projected possibilities for the team’s regular-season roster. You can take a look at all of that through the links below.

Veteran Additions, Kevin Kolb Injury Continue to Shuffle Buffalo Bills QB Situation

Sunday, August 25th, 2013

Did EJ Manuel earn the Buffalo Bills’ starting quarterback job with his on-field play this preseason? Given that he only played three quarters of preseason action before suffering a knee procedure ended his preseason, it’s hard to say that he did.

Quite frankly, however, that no longer matters. Manuel’s only legitimate competition for the starting job, Kevin Kolb, left Saturday’s preseason game versus the Washington Redskins with a concussion. According to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News, that concussion may be career-ending.

The primary concern here, of course, is Kolb’s health, especially considering that this is at least his third career concussion, according to Graham. But as it pertains to the Bills’ quarterback situation, the Bills certainly have no expectation of Kolb being back on the field for Week 1, and must prepare for the possibility of him not returning at all.

As a result, Manuel has won the quarterback competition by default. Will the rookie quarterback be ready to take the reins of the Bills offense upon his return? We will find out from his play on the field, but if the Bills were not already prepared to start Kolb upon his return, it is almost certain that they will now.
