When the Buffalo Bills traded a sixth-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for wide receiver Mike Williams in April, it looked as though the Bills were getting a bargain. A 6’2”, 212-pound pass-catcher who had at least 63 receptions and 771 receiving yards in each of his first three seasons, Williams brought the size and experience Buffalo needed in its receiving corps.

Six months later, the trade hasn’t merited much value for the Bills.

An unusual aspect of Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots, in contrast with most other recent losses by the Buffalo Bills, is that their defense, not their offense, deserved the brunt of the blame for the team’s 37-22 loss that gives the Patriots a one-game lead in the AFC East.

In spite of my skepticism after the decision, it has been evident through two games that Kyle Orton is an upgrade at quarterback for the Bills over EJ Manuel.

Much like the winning effort last week that BBD’s Josh Cornwall documented, it was a tale of two halves again Sunday for Orton and the Bills offense.

Fans of a football team tend to give the quarterback too much credit when the team wins and heap excessive blame on the signal-caller when the team loses. That’s especially been the case for the Buffalo Bills and their fanbase, understandably so, in the one season and four games of the EJ Manuel era thus far.

I’m not going to join the fanbase in its cries for Kyle Orton to the Buffalo Bills’ starting quarterback, and even in Sunday’s 23-17 loss to the Houston Texans, a loss that was sealed when Manuel threw an interception into double coverage, I don’t think Manuel deserves all the blame for the struggles of Buffalo’s offense.

That said, Manuel didn’t make himself easy to defend with his poor performance Sunday.

The Buffalo Bills went into Friday night’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers with one distinct advantage: while the contest was the first game action of the year for the Panthers, the Bills had already strapped on the pads Sunday night for the Hall of Fame Game against the New York Giants. The Bills parlayed that advantage into a 20-18 victory.

The team can some pride in its win, but it shouldn’t take any time to celebrate. Preseason victories, though better than losses, are essentially meaningless. There are still many things the Bills need to be doing better to consistently win games in the regular season. However, there were some promising areas of progress in Friday’s game, especially in the play of quarterback EJ Manuel and the Bills offense.

One year after signing Mike Williams to a contract extension that would have kept him on the team through the 2018 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded Williams to the Buffalo Bills for a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. The most experienced and proven receiver on the roster, Williams figures to be one of Buffalo’s most targeted weapons during the 2014 season.
