One year after signing Mike Williams to a contract extension that would have kept him on the team through the 2018 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded Williams to the Buffalo Bills for a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. The most experienced and proven receiver on the roster, Williams figures to be one of Buffalo’s most targeted weapons during the 2014 season.

The Stevie Johnson era is over in Buffalo. The Bills traded Johnson to the San Francisco 49ers on Friday for a 2015 fourth-round pick that can be bumped up to a 3rd.

This article isn’t about the trade or how Buffalo’s offense will look without him in 2014. No, this is about one of the most underappreciated and overcriticized players in recent memory. The majority of fans were positive about Johnson, but there was a small yet vocal group of people who bashed Johnson whenever they could.

As soon as the Buffalo Bills traded up for Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins in Thursday night’s first round of the NFL draft, the rumblings began that Stevie Johnson’s departure from Buffalo could only be a matter of time. As it turned out, it wasn’t even a matter of 24 hours, as the Bills traded Johnson to the San Francisco 49ers on Friday afternoon in exchange for a 2015 conditional fourth-round pick.

The pick netted in the trade, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, could become a third-round pick in the 2015 draft dependent upon Johnson’s production in 2014.

On Thursday night, the Buffalo Bills did something out of the norm. They traded up.

In the team’s history, the Bills have only traded up two times from their first-round slot to get a player of their choosing. Both times, the move was for a Clemson wide receiver getting drafted. In 1982, Buffalo traded up for WR Perry Tuttle; in 2014, Sammy Watkins got the call.

Trading up is a dangerous gamble in the NFL, but this trade made sense on multiple levels.

Bills Acquire Mike Williams: How Trade Could Impact Offense, Affect Draft Plans

The Buffalo Bills finally landed the veteran wide receiver help they were looking for when they traded a sixth-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Mike Williams on Friday.

The trade seems like a win-win move for both teams. The Buccaneers were ready to move on from Williams, who comes in with a history of off-field trouble and was recently stabbed in the thigh, and likely would have released him if unable to secure a trade partner. If he can keep himself on the right path, however, the Bills acquired a starting-caliber wideout at a low cost.
