The Associated Press’ NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting is projected to be a tight race between two AFC East impact players, Buffalo Bills middle linebacker Kiko Alonso and New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson.

The ballots have already been cast, but the winner will not be revealed until this year’s NFL Honors on Feb. 1. Who deserves to win this year’s award? Below, staff writer Ryan Glaze argues Alonso’s case to be the first Buffalo Bill to win the award since Shane Conlan in 1987, while editor Dan Hope explains why his vote would go to Richardson.

Breaking Down the 9-Way Race for the 6th AFC Playoff Spot

At 4-7 and trailing in the AFC East by four games, making the playoffs isn’t supposed to be considered realistic for the Buffalo Bills.

While there have been 10 NFL playoff teams since 2007 with seven or more losses, only five of those teams have been wild card teams. And there is certainly a big difference between teams who finished the year 9-7 or even 8-8, and expecting the Bills, who have not won consecutive games yet this season, to put together a significant winning streak to secure a playoff berth.

Coming out of Buffalo’s Week 12 bye, however, the possibility should not be ruled out. And that isn’t just blind optimism from a Bills perspective. In the American Football Conference, in which only five teams have winning records, there are still nine teams with a realistic of being the AFC’s second wild card and sixth playoff team.

Through the first eleven weeks of the season, the Buffalo Bills have made their fair share of big plays. Deciding on just five plays was a difficult task, but some of the “contenders” were eliminated from the list simply due to the fact they occurred in losing efforts.

The Buffalo Bills went into Sunday’s game against the New York Jets coming off their worst showing of the season in a Week 10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. After nothing had worked well against the Steelers for the Bills offense and quarterback EJ Manuel, all eyes were on the quarterback and the Bills offense as it was set to go against a strong New York Jets defense in the Bills’ first AFC East rematch of the season.

The Jets beat the Bills 27-20 in Week 3, but Sunday’s game went much differently, with the Bills blowing the Jets out for a 37-14 victory. Things did not look good for Manuel in the days leading up to the game as the Bills’ top two receivers, Robert Woods and Stevie Johnson, were ruled out with injuries. This left second-year T.J. Graham, rookie Marquise Goodwin, inexperienced Chris Hogan and underused Marcus Easley to serve as Buffalo’s receiving corps Sunday.

Even with those injuries and swirling gusts at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the Bills scored their highest point total of the season Sunday.

Buffalo Bills Respond in Dominant Fashion In 37-14 Win vs. New York Jets

Many people, myself included, counted the Buffalo Bills out of contention this season after a bad loss to a reeling Pittsburgh Steelers team last week. The talk of the team’s demise was apparently premature. From the beginning of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, the Bills set the tone with physicality and big plays. The Bills won, 37-14, and climbed right back into the playoff race, moving up to 4-7, just 1.5 games behind the Jets, who sit in the sixth playoff spot but fell to 5-5 with Sunday’s loss.

I took a look back at my key questions entering the game to see how well the Bills answered them in their dominating win.
