When the Buffalo Bills hired Rex Ryan in January, one thing was for sure: the Bills weren’t going to play it safe with their acquisitions this offseason. That certainly hasn’t been the case so far—especially Friday—when the Bills agreed to terms with former New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

At his best, Harvin can be one of the NFL’s most dynamic playmakers. A 5’11″, 184-pound offensive weapon who ran a 4.41-second 40-yard dash at the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, Harvin has a combination of speed and agility that makes him a big-play threat as not only a pass-catcher, but also as a runner and kickoff returner.

These qualities could make Harvin a big asset to the Bills. As a player who can create yardage for himself with the ball in his hands, Harvin could be highly valuable for an offense that has no great options at the quarterback position, and will therefore struggle to be prolific throwing the ball downfield.

With that being said, Harvin has often been more trouble than he is worth, and certainly qualifies as a high-risk, high-reward type of signing for the Bills.

This article is a part of a series on potential free-agent targets for the Buffalo Bills this offseason.

UPDATE: Harris was re-signed by the New York Jets to a three-year, $21.5 million contract with $15 million guaranteed on Friday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and others. The Bills almost certainly would not have been able to match that price.

With the departure of inside linebacker Kiko Alonso in Tuesday’s mega-trade for running back LeSean McCoy, the Buffalo Bills could suddenly be in the market for another player at the position. As the Bills switch from last year’s 4-3 defense under Jim Schwartz to a 3-4 defense under new head coach Rex Ryan, impending free agent David Harris—who played for Ryan with the New York Jets—would fill that inside linebacker spot nicely.

Nicknamed “Hitman” for his big hits and hard-nosed play, Harris is a eight-year NFL who spent his last six seasons playing in Ryan’s defense. That makes him an obvious target for the Bills, and a very good one at that, with three straight 100-plus tackle campaigns.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Bills are expected “to put on a full-court press” to sign Harris.
