No one, including the Buffalo Bills, knew what they getting when they signed Nickell Robey as an undrafted free agent. Generally, an undrafted player making the 53-man roster is a story in itself. Having an undrafted free agent earn playing time in all 16 games? A rare feat.

The Buffalo Bills defense is currently in a state of flux as defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has left to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and subsequently, has pilfered three Bills assistant coaches from last year’s staff, one who had been hired by the Bills earlier this month (Jeff Hafley) and might be on the verge of hiring away defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

The Bills reacted quickly and hired former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz to replace Pettine. Though his staff isn’t completely solidified yet, it appears likely that Schwartz will bring his “Wide 9,” 4-3 based defense to Buffalo.

The good news for Schwartz is that he’s entering a kitchen with a well-stocked pantry. Buffalo’s defense was its stronger side of the ball last season, and with only one glaring exception, returns all of its key contributors who, for the most part, look to be solid fits for Schwartz’ scheme.

Preview: Buffalo Bills Look to Play Spoiler vs. New England Patriots in Week 17

Although the Buffalo Bills (6-9) go into Sunday’s tilt against the New England Patriots (11-4) with no playoff implications on the line, they could derive extra motivation from what a win would prevent their AFC East rivals from obtaining.

After beating the Baltimore Ravens (8-7) last week, the Patriots put themselves in control of securing a first-round playoff bye. If they were to fall to Buffalo this Sunday, that would leave the door open for the Cincinnati Bengals (10-5) to sneak in and steal the final bye.

The Buffalo Bills hosted their AFC East rival, the Miami Dolphins, Sunday in their final home game of the 2013 season. The first game the Bills played after officially being eliminated from playoff contention in Week 15, their only tangible incentive in winning was the chance to spoil the Dolphins’ playoffs hopes.

With starting quarterback E.J. Manuel, top wide receiver Stevie Johnson and safety Aaron Williams all declared out for the game by Friday, Buffalo’s chances of winning seemed uncertain at best, even though the Bills narrowly pulled out a win in Week 7 against the Dolphins.

Regardless, backup quarterback Thad Lewis led the Bills out on a rainy day at Ralph Wilson Stadium, and the best word to describe the Bills’ play was dominance.

Pure and utter dominance.

For the most part, everything seemed to be in the Miami Dolphins’ favor going into their Week 16 game Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Coming off a Week 15 victory against the New England Patriots, the Dolphins were 8-6 and in serious contention for an AFC playoff spot. The Bills, meanwhile, were 5-9, had been eliminated from AFC playoff contention in Week 15 and game into the game without three key injured starters, including starting quarterback EJ Manuel.

The Bills and backup quarterback Thad Lewis, however, had the Dolphins’ number this season. In Week 7, while Manuel was sidelined with an LCL sprain in his right knee, Lewis got his first career win as an NFL starting quarterback when Buffalo clawed out a 23-21 victory over the Dolphins in Miami. On Sunday, with Lewis back in the lineup again and Manuel sidelined with a left knee sprain, the Bills had an absolutely dominant effort, a 19-0 shutout in their final home game of the season.
