Perhaps it’s the draftnik in me since I’ve said this about every position, but there is intriguing talent throughout this year’s draft class of defensive ends. In a league where pass-rush and stout defensive line play is at a premium, the defensive end position is among the most important to have a great rotation at.

The Buffalo Bills are in the midst of a big week: their opening week of their 2013 training camp. The offseason for Bills players and coaches is over; it’s football season now. Monday will mark the second day of practice in this year’s training camp, as the Bills begin preparation for their first preseason game on Aug. 11 and more importantly, their regular-season opener versus the New England Patriots on Sept. 8.

Previewing Training Camp

Here on Buffalo Bills Draft, it was also an important week as we previewed this year’s Bills training camp.

Our Training Camp Preview includes links to all of our content this offseason that has directly looked ahead to the battles and preparation that are taking place over the next few weeks of camp at St. John Fisher College.

That preview includes all nine installments of Ryan Talbot’s Positional Previews series. The series came to a conclusion this past week with Ryan’s comprehensive looks at the team’s Linebackers, Defensive Backs and Specialists.

A long-awaited day has finally arrived for Buffalo Bills players, coaches and their fans. The Bills will become one of the NFL’s last teams to kick off training camp tonight when their opening practice begins on at 6:10 p.m.

The Buffalo Bills are holding their training camp at St. John Fisher College for the 14th consecutive season, but there are many aspects about this year’s training camp for Bills fans to look forward to. Most notably, it will be the first training camp under the regime of new head coach Doug Marrone, and a training camp that will feature an intense quarterback competition between EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb.

Full training camp schedule: The Buffalo Bills are holding 18 practices during training camp, 15 of which will be open to the public. Click on the link to see the full schedule!

Offense and defense have already been covered in my Positional Previews at Buffalo Bills Draft, so there’s just one area left to discuss: specialists. Buffalo actually has some interesting competitions at both kicker and punter to follow at training camp.

Another area to focus on is in the return game. Leodis McKelvin was far and away Buffalo’s best return man last season, but this season he is the team’s second cornerback. Will Buffalo use McKelvin as much in the return game?

Here’s a look at all of Buffalo’s positional battles at specialist positions.

BBD Week in Review: 7/15 – 7/21

The biggest story around the Buffalo Bills last week was the non-signing of franchise-tagged free safety Jairus Byrd. (Photo: Timothy T. Ludwig —USA Today Sports)

Next week at this time, we will be discussing the start of Buffalo Bills training camp, which opens with its first practice on Sunday. This past week for the Bills, however, made news for its uneventfulness, as the team failed to reach a long-term contract agreement with free safety Jairus Byrd prior to last Monday’s deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term contracts.

What’s next for Jairus Byrd? I took a closer look at the possibilities in the linked article.

His long-term status will not be known until at earliest following this NFL season, but as far as 2013 goes, he can only sign a one-year, $6.916 million franchise tender. Less than one week until the opening of training camp, he remains unsigned and it is unknown if and when he will choose to sign that contract. Eric Samulski took a closer look at how potentially missing training camp could affect his 2013 season.

Aside from the Byrd news, we also continued to preview the 2013 Buffalo Bills roster and 2014 NFL draft this week.
