The 2015 NFL Draft begins Thursday, and teams are finalizing their respective boards to determine which players can help them most going forward.

The following rankings, broken up by positions, project how well the skills of each defensive player (See also: Offensive player rankings) in this year’s class will translate to the next level. These rankings reflect my opinions on who the best players are at each position in the draft, and do not intend to be predictive of where each player will be drafted.

Who are the best prospects in this year’s NFL draft? The following prospects, for the reasons outlined below, make up the top 100 players in my final rankings for the 2014 class. While these players have varying degrees of physical potential and football skill, all 100 of them have the talent to emerge as very good players from a deep draft class.

2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Safeties

The need to be able to stop the run out of nickel and dime defensive packages to match up with spread offensive formations has put the safety position in high demand. Having a safety who can come up and play near the line of scrimmage, but also has the range and instincts to play in single-high looks, goes a long way in being able to field an aggressive defensive scheme.

Two prospects in the 2014 NFL draft in particular offer the ability to perform well in both area, and they received first-round grades as a result.
