One week after acquiring Matt Cassel in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, the Buffalo Bills added another veteran quarterback to the roster on Thursday, when they announced the signing of former Baltimore Ravens backup Tyrod Taylor.

A 2011 sixth-round pick out of Virginia Tech, Taylor never started a game in four seasons with the Ravens. In limited action, Taylor completed just 19 of 35 passing attempts for 199 yards, with zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

That said, Taylor is just 26 years old and brings intriguing athleticism to the position. He is unlikely to ever be a viable starting quarterback in the NFL, but he at least deserves a shot to compete for the Bills’ starting job, given their lack of a sure No. 1 signal-caller.

The Buffalo Bills missed the playoffs for a 15th consecutive season in 2014, but they might not have if they had better quarterback play. Amid key players hitting free agency and rumors of front office changes, there remains no bigger question heading into the Bills’ 2015 season than that of who will be their quarterback next year, especially after Monday’s news that incumbent starting quarterback Kyle Orton is retiring from the NFL.

Buffalo and its fans have to be realistic—the Bills probably aren’t going to find their long-term answer at the quarterback position in 2015. With no first-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft, the Bills aren’t in good position to land their next Jim Kelly.

That said, the good news for the Bills is that even a slight, temporary upgrade under center might be enough for the team to make a playoff run next year. Having just completed their first winning season since 2004 by beating the New England Patriots in an ugly win Sunday, the Bills had enough talent to make the postseason this year, just not enough execution, particularly from the quarterback position, where Orton and EJ Manuel both struggled this year.

Manuel was the Bills’ first-round pick in the 2013 draft, but he has been a big disappointment and started just four games before being benched in 2014. With that in mind, the Bills have to consider all options at the quarterback position for 2015, and each of the following 15 players could be possibilities.
