Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone has made it clear the past couple weeks that he was unhappy with the Bills’ backup quarterback situation, so it came as no surprise Tuesday when the Bills signed veteran quarterback Jordan Palmer and released Thad Lewis.

Playoffs? Not for the Buffalo Bills unless second-year quarterback EJ Manuel improves greatly upon his rookie season.

The Bills talked all offseason about building around Manuel, and they weren’t lying. The team added running back depth in Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon, two new wide receivers in Sammy Watkins and Mike Williams and upgrades to their offensive line.

Manuel has been given the weapons needed for his improvement. Buffalo’s 2014 season depends on his ability to deliver.

Every year after the NFL draft, discussions often revolve around what rookies can bring to their respective teams. It’s certainly a worthy conversation, but just as important can be the development of the players entering their sophomore seasons.

That is very true for the Bills, who have eight 2013 draft picks returning to the team along with two key undrafted free agents, Jeff Tuel and Nickell Robey.

This year’s look at the Bills’ second-year players begins with Tuel, who was signed by the team out of Washington State and went on to start a game last year.

The wide receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks took center stage on Day 2 of the on-field portion of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday, with the receivers’ light shining the brightest of the trio of positions.

In one of the deepest wide receiver classes in recent memory, several top prospects solidified their draft status, second-tier players made a push up the board, and some late-round guys had excellent on-field showings.

Logan Thomas has the best physical tools of any quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Physically reminiscent of Carolina Panthers star and 2011 No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton, the Virginia Tech quarterback has a combination of size, athleticism and arm strength that is unmatched in this year’s draft class.

But while Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, UCF’s Blake Bortles and Fresno State’s Derek Carr are all being viewed as potential top-10 draft picks, grades on Thomas have ranged everywhere from the second round to undrafted free agency.
