The wide receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks took center stage on Day 2 of the on-field portion of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday, with the receivers’ light shining the brightest of the trio of positions.

In one of the deepest wide receiver classes in recent memory, several top prospects solidified their draft status, second-tier players made a push up the board, and some late-round guys had excellent on-field showings.

2014 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Can Logan Thomas Be An NFL Starting QB?

Friday, February 21st, 2014

Logan Thomas has the best physical tools of any quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Physically reminiscent of Carolina Panthers star and 2011 No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton, the Virginia Tech quarterback has a combination of size, athleticism and arm strength that is unmatched in this year’s draft class.

But while Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, UCF’s Blake Bortles and Fresno State’s Derek Carr are all being viewed as potential top-10 draft picks, grades on Thomas have ranged everywhere from the second round to undrafted free agency.

If the Buffalo Bills (3-5) are going to pull off a surprising upset and hand the Kansas City Chiefs (8-0) their first loss of the season, they are going to have to do with their third starting quarterback of the season. With EJ Manuel (LCL sprain) and Thad Lewis (bruised ribs) both inactive for Sunday’s game due to injury, the Bills are turning to Jeff Tuel, an undrafted rookie, to take the reins of the Bills offense under center in Week 9.

Joe Marino’s Senior Quarterback Rankings for the 2014 NFL Draft

Derek Carr ranks as the best quarterback in the 2013 senior class. (Photo: Christopher Hanewinckel — USA Today Sports)

The quarterback crop for the 2014 NFL draft will be greatly influenced by the potential early declarations of Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville), Marcus Mariota (Oregon), Brett Hundley (UCLA) and Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M). Among the senior quarterbacks, however, there are two who stand out from the pack: Fresno State’s Derek Carr and San Jose State’s David Fales.

I grade both Carr and Fales as first-round draft selections. The rest of the group combines a mixture of solid physical ability, good makeup and intangibles, but none of them put it all together. (Then again, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers weren’t the total package when they were drafted either)

Overall, this year’s quarterback class is much deeper than that of the 2013 NFL draft, which had just three quarterbacks selected in the first three rounds and 11 total quarterbacks selected.

From now until the week before the Senior Bowl, I will be releasing a set of rankings for one position group each week, breaking down the top 2014 NFL draft prospects at each position. These rankings will include seniors only.

This week, we start with the draft class’ top-10 senior quarterbacks.
